Villanova vs Eastern Washington: NCAA FCS Playoff Semifinal

Filed under:

Villanova and Eastern Washington start the NCAA Division I National Football Championship Subdivision semifinals on Friday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. ET, with the winner going on to face Delaware or Georgia Southern for the FCS Championship.

Storyline: The defending FCS champion Villanova Wildcats made a splash on their way to the semifinals, winning each of their games by 18 or more points including a 42-24 victory over then-No. 1 Appalachian State in the quarterfinals. The unseeded Wildcats' version of the Wildcat offense dominated the Mountaineers defense as wideout Matt Szczur put forth a spectacular day, finding the endzone four times in three different ways -- two rushing, one throwing and one receiving. Now Villanova is just two games away from defending its national title.

The Eastern Washington University Eagles' reward for their improbable overtime win over North Dakota State is another home game at the "Inferno" -- Roos Field in Cheney, Wash. -- against the Wildcats. EWU nearly fell in the semis. Amidst a snow storm, North Dakota State took a 31-24 lead with 5:51 left in the game, but EWU was able to orchestrate a 13-play, 90-yard drive to the tie game up with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell found Tyler Hart for a 25-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime and a fumble recovery on , North Dakota State's ensuing possession sealed the victory. The Eagles will host the Wildcats on their new red Sprinturf surface at Roos Field on Friday.
