NBA Fines Knicks $200,000 for Conducting Illegal Draft Workouts

Filed under:

The NBA has fined the New York Knicks $200,000 for conducting illegal draft workouts.

Knicks scout Rodney Heard, who led the workouts, also was fined $20,000, the league announced Thursday.

The league says Heard violated rules restricting contact between teams and players eligible for the draft in May 2007 and May 2010.

The NBA had been investigating the Knicks since a Yahoo! Sports report in October that Heard conducted workouts of draft prospects over three years in violation of the league's rules. According to the report, the workouts included players such as Brandon Rush, Joe Crawford, Wilson Chandler, Dar Tucker, Ekpe Udoh and Troy Jackson.

In fact, Rush told Yahoo! Sports that he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during one of the workouts, an injury that forced him to withdraw from the 2007 draft and required months of rehabilitation following surgery.

The Knicks said in a statement they will abide by the ruling and have no further comment.
