Zuma's Libya visit 'inconclusive'
Talks between South Africa's President Zuma and Col Gaddafi in Tripoli have ended with no announcement of progress towards an end to Libya's conflict.
Mr Zuma said Col Gaddafi would agree to a ceasefire but would not step down - as demanded by Nato and Libyan rebels.
The ceasefire proposal was rejected last month after a mediation mission by Mr Zuma on behalf of the African Union.
A spokesman for Libya's rebels dismissed calls for a ceasefire, and promised to continue their offensive.
Italy Foreign Minister Franco Frattini is expected to visit the rebel-held city of Benghazi on Tuesday.
Mr Frattini will meet members of the Libya Transitional National Council, the opposition alliance against Gaddafi.
His visit comes a day after a news conference in Rome where eight senior Libyan army officers announced their defection from Col Gaddafi's forces.
On Monday, Nato temporarily lifted its no-fly zone over Libya to allow President Jacob Zuma's South African air force plane to land at the main military air base next to Tripoli.
Mr Zuma emerged from the talks saying Gaddafi is ready to accept an African Union initiative for a ceasefire that would stop all hostilities, including Nato airstrikes in support of rebel forces.
"He is ready to implement the road map," said the South African president.
He added that Nato raids were undermining African mediation efforts.
"We discussed the necessity of giving the Libyan people the opportunity to solve their problem on their own," he added.
But the calls for a ceasefire were immediately rejected by rebel Foreign Minister Fathi Baja, in Benghazi.
"We refuse completely. We don't consider it a political initiative, it is only some stuff that Gaddafi wants to announce to stay in power," he told the Associated Press news agency.
Mr Baja added that the rebels were preparing to launch an offensive against Gaddafi.
The BBC's Andrew North, in Tripoli, said Mr Zuma appears to have made little progress in his attempts to find a peaceful resolution to Libya's crisis.
Both Nato and Libya's rebels had already rejected the AU plan, on the grounds it does not call on Mr Gaddafi to step down.
With the Libyan leader standing firm, it looks like both sides are deadlocked, our correspondent said.
It looks likely that Nato will now intensify its military campaign, with Tripoli already bracing itself for more air strikes, he added.
Fresh air raids on the capital were reported on Monday night, according to Libyan state television.
Nato fighters also targeted sites in the desert city of Al Jufrah, 460km (285 miles) south of Tripoli, it was reported.
The raids have not been confirmed but planes were heard flying over the capital at around midnight local time (2200 GMT Monday), the AFP news agency said.

Quick and clean Funnel news app is free today
Funnel is a quick way to scan the Google News headlines. It has a simple interface. Sections are color coded, and the size of the headlines gives you a quick visual idea of the importance of the story based on the number of related articles.
The app supports news from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the U.K. You can set the app to display in the appropriate language for the country selected.
If you touch an item, you get the first paragraph. Tap 'read more' and you get the content in the built-in browser. You can't search, or see related stories. In the app preferences you can select the kind of news you want in broad categories. I don't think Funnel is a substitute for more feature-rich apps such as Pulse, but it's nice for a quick dive into the news. The app worked reliably, but was a little slow at times to load the full stories into the viewer. The app is free today only and requires iOS 3.2 or later. It also runs on the iPod touch and the iPad but it is not iPad native.

Foxconn worker from Chengdu factory commits suicide
Sadly, a 20-year-old male employee at Foxconn (Apple's contract manufacturer for many products) committed suicide Thursday morning, according to a report from the Hong Kong China News Agency (HKCNA) cited by Bloomberg. The worker was reportedly employed at the company's new facility in Chengdu where an explosion killed three workers on May 20.
Further details about Thursday morning's incident are sparse, and the reasons behind the factory worker's suicide are currently unknown. This is at least the 14th publicized death by suicide among Foxconn's workforce since the start of 2010.
Foxconn chairman Terry Gou declined to comment about the incident saying he doesn't know the full details about the apparent suicide. However, last year, Gou said suicides by Foxconn employees were prompted by personal issues rather than tough working conditions in his company's facilities.
Labor groups like China Labor Watch disagree. Foxconn's critics have slammed the Taipei-based company for operating facilities with a sweatshop atmosphere -- an accusation Gou vehemently denies.
In response to last year's suicides and subsequent harsh criticism, Foxconn, which builds electronic products for several other recognizable brands including Sony and Dell, raised wages, slashed overtime, offered counseling, and tried to improve the work-life balance for its more than one million factory workers in China.
Although Foxconn's suicide rate remains markedly lower than China's national average, Thursday morning's death, last Friday's explosion, and protests outside a Foxconn shareholder meeting earlier this month suggest the manufacturer has more work to do to improve employee safety and overall satisfaction.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the friends and family of the young man who died.

Twitter 'gives data to council'
An English council has taken Twitter to court in the US in a bid to discover the identity of a blogger behind allegedly libellous statements.
South Tyneside Council went to court in California after three councillors and an official complained they were libelled in a blog called "Mr Monkey".
Twitter said it could not comment on individual court requests.
Media law experts suggest the case may prompt more UK citizens to take action in the US, where Twitter is based.
Independent South Shields councillor Ahmed Khan is suspected of being the author of the blog, which has made a series of unfounded allegations against council leaders.
Mr Khan, who denies being the author of the blog, said he was told by Twitter in April that a request had been lodged relating to his account and messages he had sent.
He said: "I don't fully understand it but it all relates to my Twitter account and it not only breaches my human rights, but it potentially breaches the human rights of anyone who has ever sent me a message on Twitter.
"This is Orwellian. It is like something out of 1984."
The Mr Monkey blog has made a number accusations against the council's Labour leader Iain Malcolm, as well as David Potts, the former Conservative leader who now serves as an Independent councillor, Labour councillor Anne Walsh and Rick O'Farrell, the council's head of enterprise and regeneration.
They are all named on papers delivered by the council's lawyers to the Superior Court of California.
A spokesman for South Tyneside Council said: "This legal action was initiated by the council's previous chief executive and has continued with the full support of the council's current chief executive.
"The council has a duty of care to protect its employees and as this blog contains damaging claims about council officers, legal action is being taken to identify those responsible."
He said he had no knowledge of councillors attending court hearings in the US or whether Twitter had as yet handed over any confidential information.
A spokesman for Twitter said: "We cannot comment on any specific order or request.
"As noted in our law enforcement guidelines, it is our policy to notify our users before disclosure of account information."
Lawyers challenged Twitter in the High Court in London to reveal the identities of its users who violated a super-injunction involving Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs.
MP John Hemming named the star in Parliament as the footballer who had used a super-injunction to hide an alleged affair, after
Video Spotlight: Dave (Phoenix) Farrell From Linkin Park Visits Haiti 15 Months After The Earthquake
Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, a member of the two-time Grammy winning, multiplatinum band Linkin Park, shares his impressions following his trip to Haiti with Music for Relief and the United Nations Foundation. Phoenix traveled to Haiti to see firsthand how the United Nations is helping Haiti rebuild, fifteen months after a major earthquake killed hundreds of thousands and destroyed much of the nation’s infrastructure.
Along with other participating artists, Phoenix is encouraging fans to Download to Donate (or text “RELIEF” to 41010) and make a $10 donation as part of non-profit organization Music for Relief’s work to support the recovery. In return, supporters gain access to a digital album featuring unreleased tracks by a growing number of artists, including Alanis Morissette, Glitch Mob, Crystal Method, Slash, and the original song by Linkin Park, Not Alone. Since it’s inauguration in 2005, the charity has raised more than $4 million for victims of natural disasters around the world, including Hurricane Katrina, monsoon flooding in Pakistan, and the tsunami in Japan. Since the earthquake, Download to Donate for Haiti has raised more than $270,000 supporting the work of five organizations in Haiti including the UN Foundation.

Five Hilarious BBQ Disaster Videos To Watch This Memorial Day Weekend
Kentucky Football Picks Up Commitment from Wide Receiver DeMarcus Sweat
Head coach Joker Phillips picked up his fourth commitment for 2012 when wide receiver DeMarcus Sweat announced today that he would be enrolling at Kentucky.
Sweat is currently a student at Stephenson High in Stone Mountain, Georgia, a school that has produced three other recruits currently on Kentucky's roster. These players include sophomore tailback Raymond Sanders III, freshman linebacker Jabari Johnson, and redshirt freshman tight end Ronnie Shields.
Sweat is listed at 6'2", 185 lbs., but is currently unranked by most major recruiting websites.
Though lacking in hype, Sweat possesses a ton of speed, clocking in at 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He has soft hands and a good deal of straight-line speed, but is a bit lacking in the areas of strength and quickness.
The coaching staff was impressed by both his speed and catching ability after his appearance at Kentucky's skills camp earlier this week and immediately phoned him with an offer.
Sweat will join fellow 2012 commitments Patrick Towles, Josh Harris, and Thomas Chapman. Chapman, a four-star defensive tackle from Louisville, is the only ranked player in the class according to Rivals.com.

Stars Come Out For Storm Victims In The US
Written by Michaela Carroll
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina ripped through Louisiana, leaving almost 2000 people dead and countless more homeless. And now April 2011 has seen one of the worst outbreaks of storms in recent history, to the extent that they have been renamed the ‘2011 Super Outbreak’.
The tornados, which are still in motion, have devastated the South, Midwestern and Northeastern states in America, particularly Alabama. More than 300 lives have been lost and thousands more devastated.
In response to the outbreak, celebrities have come out in droves to help. This month alone, Britney Spears has hosted An Evening of Southern Style in support of the St. Bernard Project, Brad Paisley donated proceeds of his new song to Alabama’s tornado relief fund, Selena Gomez has started a campaign to raise funds for Save the Children's Southeast drive, Kenny Chesney is to donate the proceeds of his upcoming Alabama concert to GiveTuscaloosa.com and Roy Jones JR is urging fans to donate to the relief efforts.
Britney Spears’ evening was supported by many of her A-list friends, such as Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Kelly Osbourne and Kim Kardashian. The evening raised a whopping $200000 for the St Bernard Fund. At the event, Britney said, “The St Bernard Project is an incredible organization whose main focus is rebuilding Louisiana [which is] always in my heart.”
Brad Paisley’s new song ‘Old Alabama’ has reached # 1 in the American Country Music charts and Paisley is donating all artistic royalties to the relief efforts. Randy Owen, who features in the song, has said ’There’s no way to describe the destruction that’s gone on. It’s just a battery of emotion.’
Selena Gomez’ efforts to help Save the Children’s Southeast drive have been mainly focused through Twitter, where she is urging fans to ‘donate $10 to Save the Children Southwest U.S.’s division’. The current amount raised is as yet unknown but with such a dedicated fan base, the response is bound to have been huge.
The Alabama concert that Kenny Chesney is hosting in support of the relief efforts is set to raise a huge amount and Kenny has said he is ‘grateful for the chance to aid [the people of Toscaloosa] in this way.’
Lastly, boxer Roy Jones JR has joined forces with website 8countnews.com to encourage fans to donate to the relief efforts. He’s even given a little extra incentive; every fan that donates $250 or more receives a personal call from Roy and also a personalized, autographed photograph!
The storms continue to devastate the US, moving into Indiana, Missouri, Illinois and other states. Luckily, no lives have been claimed by this round as yet, however there are reports of dozens injured, mobile homes being flipped and roofs being torn off houses.

Wayne Rooney: Man United's Rooney Gives Gallant Effort in Loss to Barcelona
Wayne Rooney Scores Manchester United's Only Goal in 3-1 Loss to Barca
Barcelona won the Champions League final against Manchester United on Saturday, but it had nothing to do with Wayne Rooney's performance.
Man United's longtime star scored the squad's sole goal in the 3-1 defeat to Lionel Messi and the gang, and was a handful for Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique.
His goal in the 34th minute knotted the game at 1-1 and was a thing of beauty, crossing across midfield before swinging a shot left into the corner of the net beyond a diving Victor Valdes.
He did all this while Javier Hernandez had little impact, and the rest of his team, as well.

It's the same fiery personality that has seen him get into trouble before that propelled him on Saturday against the world's best club.
A lot of talk will understandably be directed toward the Barca team after capturing the title, a team that is one of the greatest in history, but Rooney's effort shouldn't go unnoticed.
He gave a performance fitting for a Champions League final, rising to the occasion when Manchester United needed him most.
There's a lot of talk about Hernandez surpassing Rooney when all is said and done, but on Saturday Rooney proved just how invaluable he is and has been throughout his career.
Rooney is a player fit to be a champion, as he's demonstrated time and time again.
Why dogs may be able to help with autism
Dogs can help reduce stress in parents of children with lifelong developmental disability autism, a study suggests.
The University of Lincoln compared 20 families with dogs with 20 without.
Daniel Mills told a Royal Society of Medicine conference early results suggested any breed could improve communication and relationships.
The veterinary behavioural medicine professor hopes to use video footage to show how dogs can improve child eating, sleeping and tantrum behaviour.
At a three-day Parents' Autism Workshops and Support course, the families listed more than a thousand ways their dog had helped - from developing language and establishing a routine to using the pet to request action in a non-confrontational way.
The Saunders family decided to get Boogie, an 18-month King-Charles-cocker-spaniel cross, because of four-year-old son Oak's close connection with animals.
Professor Daniel Mills University of Lincoln“While there is no shortage of opinion on how dogs can help, there has been little money given to scientifically look into this."”
Rowan Saunders said: "Oak has particular problems with stepping out the front door. To him, it is like he is stepping off a cliff.
"So we have started to use Boogie to help Oak with transitions, from going from one situation to another.
"It is reassurance. He thinks that if Boogie can do it, then he can do it.
"Oak's verbal skills are better. He is eating different textured foods as he feeds Boogie different foods. We do a lot of grooming with Boogie, so Oak is learning about self-care and hygiene.
"In the last four months Oak has excelled himself - he keeps surprising us everyday."
Professor Mills said: "While there is no shortage of opinion on how dogs can help, there has been little money given to scientifically look into this."
The Dogs for the Disabled charity has had 1,300 inquiries during the past six months from parents asking how dogs could help them.
Chief executive Peter Gorbing said: "Dogs are relatively low-cost and low-tech.
"Now is our moment. People were previously sceptical of what role they could play, but recently I have found a more receptive audience. Things are changing rapidly."

Minnesota Representative Michelle Bachmann has long been toying with the idea of running for president, saying she'll run "if she felt that's what the Lord was calling her to do." Sounds like the Lord's come calling: "Bachmann made it clear Friday that she was leaning toward a presidential run," the AP reports. "I have this calling, this tugging on my heart that this is the right thing to do," Bachmann said. She plans to announce her run next month in Iowa, as per God's request. [AP]
