Arian Foster: Is Texans RB Making Enough Progress to Start in Week 1?

Hamstring injuries can be tricky. You know that, I know that, and the Houston Texans certainly know that.

This is because arguably their best player is dealing with one right now. After battling hamstring issues at the start of camp, Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster strained his hammy during Houston's third preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Since then, his status for Houston's season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday has been in doubt.

But fear not, Texans fans. The news regarding Foster is good. Not great, but good.

According to the team's official Twitter feed, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak described Foster's status on Wednesday as being "day-to-day." He also said Foster was able to go a "little harder" in his rehab today.

"The progress has been very good, and I know that there was more progress today," said Kubiak.

You can make of this what you will, but I think it's significant that Kubiak did not say Foster was "doubtful," "questionable," or even "probable." While it's true he wasn't exactly filling out an official injury report, saying Foster is day-to-day allows room for a little optimism.

As for if and when Foster is going to be able to return to practice, a report from Sporting News says Kubiak claimed he could return as soon as Thursday.

That would give Foster three whole days to prepare for Indy, which you have to think would be plenty. Assuming all goes well, of course.

Of course, the fear of things not going all well is why the Texans are going to play it as safe as possible with Foster. If Foster practices and just doesn't look right, you have to think the team will sit him in Week 1 and take its chances with Derrick Ward.

That's not the worst thing that could happen. Ward averaged 6.3 yards per carry last year, and he had a couple of solid games here and there. He's not a bad Plan B.

Besides, even if they don't have Foster, the Texans aren't going to lose to a Colts squad that doesn't have Peyton Manning, right?

.... Right?
