The Texas Longhorns may have been the No. 24 team in the nation according to the AP poll on Saturday, but they certainly didn't look like it.
The Longhorns, after falling behind at the half against unranked BYU, were able to do just enough to come away with the victory at home.
Final Score: Texas 17, BYU 16
Game Recap: The Texas Longhorns found themselves trailing the Cougars at the half on Saturday, 13-3, behind an anemic offensive performance that included starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert getting pulled in the second quarter.
The Cougars scored the first 13 points of the game before the Longhorns kicked a field goal with 1:44 remaining in the first half. BYU scored its first and only touchdown when quarterback Jake Heaps connected on a 6-yard touchdown with freshman receiver Ross Apo at the start of the second quarter.
After halftime, Longhorns' backups Case McCoy and David Ash took turns pumping enough life into the Longhorns' offense to scrape by with the win. Senior running back Cody Johnson had both scores for the Longhorns, both goal-line plunges.
Player that emerged: Boy, oh boy, picking a player that "emerged" in this game is like scouring for bottom-feeders in the depths of the ocean. McCoy, Colt's younger brother, went 7-for-8 for 57 yards in the Longhorns' comeback though, so I would probably give the game ball to him. Also, freshman running back Malcolm Brown deserves way more carries. After rushing 16 times for 86 yards against Rice, he was given only 14 carries on Saturday, but produced 68 yards on the ground. At this point, it seems the Longhorns would be better-served with a run-heavy gameplan.
Injury News: Both teams were able to make it out of the game without any significant injuries on Saturday, which, of course, is always a good thing.
Look Ahead: The Longhorns, now 2-0, go on to face UCLA next Saturday. The Bruins found themselves in a shootout with the Houston Cougars to start the season on Sept. 3, with quarterback Richard Brehaut passing for a game-high 264 yards and two touchdowns and running for another score. But Casey Keenum and Co. proved to be too much, sending the Bruins away, 38-34.
The Cougars, now 1-1, get set for a battle with Utah next Saturday. After defeating Montana State to start the season, the Utes lost a squeaker against USC on Saturday, 17-14. Quarterback Jordan Wynn had a decent game after a solid performance against Montana State, but running back John White IV, who exploded in the first week, rushed for just 55 yards on 19 carries against the Trojans. The Utes are still finding themselves at this point.
