They say that you can only enjoy success at big name schools.
Mario Cristobal would beg to differ.
The Florida International head coach just notched his first win against a team from an AQ conference, as his Panthers took down Louisville 24-17 at Louisville.
And this comes after a seasons of firsts last season. FIU had their first winning season, their first Sun Belt Championship and their first bowl win against Toledo in the Little Ceaser's Bowl.
Granted, Louisville isn't exactly an Alabama or Ohio State, but who would have thought that a team like FIU could go on the road and take down an AQ team.
Stories like this is what makes me love college football.
Cristobal and FIU still have plenty of room for improvement. They did only go 7-6 last season, and winning the Sun Belt isn't exactly one of college football's greatest achievements. But who knows? Boise State started off as a small school in a small conference, and look what kind of noise they've been able to make.
I'm sure that if Cristobal keeps up what he has going, some big name program is going to come and offer him a job at one of college football's storied programs. And really, no one would blame him for taking a job with more more money, prestige and talent to offer than FIU.
But if he decides to stay at FIU and really build this program, who knows what might be possible?
At any rate, this is a sweet win that FIU and the Sun Belt can enjoy over a Big East team.
