Prototypes makes iPhone mockups a breeze

This is a cool one, at least for iPhone app designers. Prototypes is a Mac app that lets you take those handcrafted mockups of iPhone screens and turn them into a clickable demo you can share with any iPhone or iPod touch user.

Prototypes takes just about any image format, including straight Photoshop PSD files. Once you drag them into your project, adding hotspots is as easy as clicking and dragging. Create a hotspot and then drag the link to whatever page should be loaded when it's tapped. You can assign a "back" action as well. All links can have a transition (in any direction) assigned to them. You can even add notes that display when a page is loaded and then disappear.

Aside from its ease-of-use, the real beauty of Prototypes is the free web service that comes with it. When you share a mockup from within the app, you get a ptyp.es url and a PIN. Have your client, your teammates, your boss or whomever log in to ptyp.es. They'll be asked to install the web app on their home page, after which they can enter your PIN and click through your mockup.

Prototypes currently only works on iPhones and iPod touches, but the developer expects to roll out iPad support in the next couple of months. At US$39.99, it's not a cheap investment, but if you deal with iPhone mockups regularly, this could be a lifesaver. The fact that you get the web service without a subscription makes the up-front price seem quite reasonable, at least to me. You can try out a pre-built prototype at the Prototypes website, and purchase it directly on the Mac App Store.

How to: Share iCal calendars without MobileMe

This how-to over at Gearz.de will help you share your iCal calendar around even if you don't have a subscription to Apple's online MobileMe service (a very forgivable offense, especially since its expected replacement iCloud service is now just a week away). Unfortunately, the writeup is a little technical, as you'll need to actually configure your local web server to share out and broadcast the calendar to anyone who needs to read it. That means you'll need to do a little console typing and config file editing, but as long as you follow directions, it should work just fine.

A simpler solution might be to use an app like BusyCal to do the syncing for you, or even just use a service that's already in the cloud, like Google Calendar (which is what I actually do). But if you're already tied to iCal, either because you've got a calendar on there or just because you like the app, following those steps should help you get sharing to anyone up and running.

Matt Cassel: He Still Has a Lot to Prove as the Chiefs Starting Quarterback

After putting up 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in his first season in Kansas City, many Chiefs fans were unsure if Matt Cassel could get the job done as the starting quarterback going into the 2010 season.

Cassel did not let the critiques get to his head.

His determination and focus helped the Chiefs win the AFC West for the first time since 2003. Cassel threw 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He is the youngest quarterback in franchise history to throw 27 touchdowns since the NFL/AFL merger.

Due to Cassel’s magnificent performance, he earned an invitation to the 2011 Pro Bowl.

Cassel was able to prove himself in his second season as a Chief, but his third season in Kansas City will be intriguing to watch.

Schedule

Kansas City won’t have Tennessee, 49ers">San Francisco, Cleveland, Arizona or St. Louis on their schedule. As division champions, they’ll face teams that hold higher credentials.

Kansas City will play seven teams that placed in the top 10 in total defense last season. The only team they played last season that finished in the top 10 was San Diego.

The Chiefs have the Steelers, Jets, Packers and Bears listed on their schedule. Those four teams finished in the top 10 in total defense, but more importantly, they all appeared in the conference title games.

Final Two Games

Cassel ran into a brick wall when he played against Oakland and Baltimore in the regular season finale and in Round 1 of the playoffs.

Against the Raiders, Cassel was sacked a season-high five times and threw two interceptions. He threw three interceptions against the Ravens in his first postseason start.

In those two games combined, Cassel threw no touchdowns and five interceptions.

Playoff Performance

Although Cassel played in only one postseason game, he threw the second-most interceptions among all quarterbacks who participated in the postseason. He was the only starting quarterback who did not throw a touchdown during the playoffs.

He finished the postseason with a quarterback rating of 20.4. That is the lowest rating a quarterback in the postseason with at least 14 pass attempts since the 2002 postseason when Chicago Bears quarterback Shane Matthews had a 17.9 rating.

When the Chiefs hosted the Ravens, everyone saw a different side of Cassel. This game was a wake-up call for him. Cassel knows that the Ravens defense is similar to teams he’ll face next season.

If the Chiefs want to repeat as division champions, they’ll have to earn it. It all starts with the quarterback. Can Cassel rebound after struggling in his last two games?

Scott Pioli and Todd Haley made a lot of changes last year to help Cassel succeed in 2010 by signing Casey Wiegmann and Ryan Lilja to the offensive line. This season, Pioli and Haley brought quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn and drafted a receiver in Jonathan Baldwin to compliment Dwayne Bowe.

With the departure of Charlie Weis, Cassel will have to learn a new system under offensive coordinator Bill Muir.

With the challenge ahead, Cassel’s touchdown total may go down while his interception total is expected to rise. With one good season under his belt, he’ll go into the 2011 season—or 2012—with a higher level of confidence.

Including the playoffs, Cassel has started 46 games in the last three seasons. He knows how he’ll be tested and what he has to go through to pass.

The biggest test of Cassel’s career awaits him.

Tom Brady Launches Football Charity Challenge For Best Buddies

American football Quarterback Tom Brady will host the second annual Tom Brady Football Challenge to benefit Best Buddies International early next month.

The game – to be held at Harvard University Football Stadium – will feature Tom Brady as Quarterback, other New England Patriots such as Dan Koppen, Julian Edelman, Tully Banta-Cain, Tedy Bruschi, other celebrities, special athletes and more!

And you have the opportunity to score with Tom Brady and play alongside him in the game by entering a special Raffle! The winner will receive the opportunity to play on Tom’s team during the Football game AND attend the post-game VIP and celebrity chef tailgate event!

As with traditional football, the game will be played in four quarters, and each quarter will have rotating teams on the field, but Tom Brady will remain as a fixed Quarter Back.

Teams will be made up of celebrities, athletes, and the beneficiaries of the event – the Best Buddies – individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. And a half time show will feature entertainment and surprise guests!

Tom Brady is well known for his work supporting Best Buddies International’s work – in May, 2009, he led a charity bike challenge for the organization, and in the previous year he donated $24,000 to the charity.

Best Buddies is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing friends and jobs for people with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,400 middle school, high school and college campuses across the country and internationally. Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute services that estimate a value of $70 million ? at no cost to the community.
