Nnamdi Asomugha to Eagles: 5 Reasons Why the Eagles Are Now the Team to Beat

The Philadelphia Eagles have sent a message to the rest of the league in the last 72 hours of free agency. That message is the Eagles are swinging for the fences. It's Superbowl or bust. Under Andy Reid, the Eagles have fallen a game short of the Superbowl four times, while also losing Superbowl XXXIX.

It's clear the time to win is now. The fanbase in Philadelphia is getting impatient, and for good reason. The Eagles have never won a Superbowl and haven't won a league title since 1960. Obviously, the Eagles are going all in this offseason.

For those keeping track at home, so far the Eagles have signed one the best corners, one of the best pass rushers from 2010, another top notch corner, a former Pro Bowl quarterback to backup Michael Vick, and one of the best defensive tackles on the open market.

The Eagles have positioned themselves as the team to beat. Other contenders have made a nice move or two, but no one else has put as many Pro Bowl caliber players on an already really good football team.

Naming places after famous people

This week the city fathers of Aberdeen, Washington, decided it might not be wise to name a bridge after Kurt Cobain. So what are the perils and pitfalls of renaming things after famous people?

Are Female Racehorses That Make Impacts a Passing Fluke or New Trend?

For as long as horse racing has been around, the idea has always been strong that female horses are inferior to their male counterparts. The vast majority of races are sex divided, composed either entirely of fillies and mares, or male horses.

There have been exceptions to this rule, of course. Winning Colors stole the Kentucky Derby, horse racing’s greatest prize, over Forty Niner in 1988. Genuine Risk also won the roses in 1980, as did Regret back in 1915.

There was also Miesque, who conquered the Breeder’s Cup Mile over males not once, but twice in the 1980s, and Safely Kept, who defeated Dayjur by a head in the 1990 Breeder’s Cup Sprint (although it could be argued that Dayjur’s antics in the stretch cost him the race).

Despite this prestigious list, victories for mares over males have been few and far between. However, in recent years, fillies and mares seem to be making their mark in a major way in the world’s biggest races.

The question which arises is if female horses have been this equal to their male counterparts all along, and their owners and trainers too timid to run them in the biggest races, or if for some reason fillies and mares are just starting to take things to the next level.

Since 2007, North America has seen the Breeder’s Cup Classic, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, Breeder’s Cup Mile, Woodward Stakes, Queen’s Plate and Haskell Invitational (among others) taken by female horses, as well as having a filly finish second in the Kentucky Derby, and those are all Grade One races. Since 2002, three female horses have been crowned Horse of the Year, including the last two years.

Of course, the first name which comes to mind is Zenyatta, the super-mare who lost only once in her entire 20-race career, and that being by a mere head. She became the first filly or mare to win the Breeder’s Cup Classic when she dominated in 2009 after defeating every mare thrown in her path.

She won over $7 million in purses, making her the most successful female racehorse in North American history, by earnings. She earned Horse of the Year last year after nearly taking the Breeder’s Cup Classic for the second year in a row.

Also on the list is Rachel Alexandra, who took the middle jewel of the North American Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, in 2009. However, not only did she defeat males in the Preakness, she again showed them who was boss in the Haskell Invitational and Woodward Stakes.

Rachel Alexandra was named Horse of the Year in 2009 in a battle with Zenyatta, although the two never met on the track, much to the dismay of racing fans around the world.

It’s a shame to only now mention Irish-bred Goldikova, who would likely be widely known as the best racemare of the last several years if not for the aforementioned two. Goldikova is currently on a streak of winning an unprecedented three straight Breeder’s Cup Mile.

Not only is this an amazing statistic in itself, but in a world where racehorses are usually retired at age three or four, this mare is aiming to win the race for the fourth time in November.

In her home continent of Europe, Goldikova has repeatedly defeated horses of both sexes in the most prestigious mile races, and today she scored her astounding 14th Group or Grade One race in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville in France.

Other mares who have made history in the last several years include Rags to Riches, who defeated Curlin in the 2007 Belmont Stakes, becoming the first filly to do so in a century. Ontario-bred Inglorious won the Queen’s Plate, Canada’s premier race, this year. There is the undefeated Australian sprinter Black Caviar, who has been nothing short of perfection in her career and has been rated one of the top horses in the world.

Some fillies have yet to face males but have still made it an exciting year for racing enthusiasts. Havre de Grace was proclaimed to be a potential Horse of the Year candidate after dominating most of her races this season. Those she has not conquered she fell just short to Blind Luck, and the two have formed a very entertaining rivalry.

Although I have done my best, this list is likely far from being complete. In the end, it does appear fillies and mares are beginning to show that they are, indeed, nearly if not equal to male racehorses. More of them are being entered against males, in the biggest races, and more of them are leaving a mark.

Perhaps the ideal that fillies and mares are inferior will soon be put to rest, forever.

Sprint feels strain of not carrying the iPhone

Today Sprint released their quarterly earnings and things could be better. How? They could be selling the iPhone. That's not me saying that either. It's Sprint. Shares in the non-iPhone provider are down almost 15% today after the company announced larger than expected Q2 loss per share. The reason for this was while Sprint did add 1.1 million new customers for the quarter, they lost over 101,000 of them. Many of those jumped ship to Verizon or AT&T for the iPhone 4 or the $49 iPhone 3GS.

There are rumors that Sprint will be carrying the iPhone later this year, and for Sprint investors' sakes I hope those rumors pan out. The only other major US cellular provider that doesn't carry the iPhone is T-mobile, which AT&T is trying to buy. Understandably, Sprint doesn't want that to happen. Who wants to be the only big three cellular provider that doesn't sell the hottest phone on earth?

The Wing Wizard: Juan Mata

The midfield being most heavily linked with a move to Arsenal is Valencia's 23-year-old Spanish winger Juan Mata.

If Samir Nasri does not respond well to having to stay a Gunner and Theo Walcott and Andrei Arshavin fail to produce more consistent and productive form, a move for Mata - a World Cup winner last year with Spain - could become crucial to Arsenal's efforts to win the Premier League.

If Wenger can find several players who can provide good service to lethal strike duo Gervinho and Robin Van Persie, there is no reason why Arsenal could not challenge Chelsea and both Manchester clubs for first place.

Although Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp confirmer after his team's 3-2 pre-season friendly victory over Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday that he likes Mata and had left it to chairman Daniel Levy to put in a bid to Valencia, Talksport's Graham Hunter insists that Arsenal is Mata's preferred destination.

If Arsenal can meet the Spanish club's ?21 million ($ 30 million) valuation and agree personal terms with the player, they will be in pole position to land a footballer who has scored 33 goals in just 129 La Liga appearances, from midfield.

Kyle Orton Trade Rumors: Deal to the Dolphins Dead in the Water

Reports from Denver and Miami on Friday state that the Broncos and Dolphins could not agree in terms to trade quarterback Kyle Orton to the Sunshine State.

Orton, 28, has been linked to several teams since the NFL lockout lifted. It appears as there will be competition between Orton and 2010 first-round pick Tim Tebow for the starting QB spot on the Broncos.

Even with all the trade speculation swirling through the team, Orton still appeared Thursday when Broncos camp opened. He was there taking snaps with the first-string players.

When asked about what he felt he was worth, Orton joked after practice that he felt he was worth at least a third-round pick. Apparently, Miami does not agree.

Due to Orton still being on the Denver roster Friday afternoon, he earned a $1.5 million roster bonus. NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora believes that even though the bonus has been paid, the Broncos are still willing to move Orton and eat the bonus.

With the trade talks breaking off, Miami made an alternative move to provide depth at the QB position.

The Dolphins signed Matt Moore to a two-year, $5 million contract to serve as back-up to Chad Henne. Moore had a nice small sample size for the Carolina Panthers in 2009 throwing for 1,000 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions in five starts.

His 2010 was much more forgettable; in six games, he threw 10 interceptions to five scores before going on injury reserve in Week 9. He was 7-6 as a starter in Carolina.

Even with the Dolphins signing a quarterback, La Canfora still believes Miami would like to make the move for Orton. There’s plenty of time to still work a trade, as the deadline is not for months.

Trading for Orton would still make lots of sense for the Dolphins.

Reuniting Kyle Orton with current Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall could spell success. The two shared the 2009 season together in Denver. During that 16-game span, Orton threw to Marshall 101 times for 1,120 yards and ten touchdowns.

They also had a memorable Week 14 match-up at Indianapolis where Marshall snatched 21 balls for 200 yards and two scores.

Rumors seem to show only Miami would still be interested in acquiring Orton. Other teams that had notable quarterback issues (Seattle, Tennessee, Arizona, Minnesota, Buffalo and San Francisco) have already made moves to solidify their needs. The only teams that really have question marks with their signal callers are Cincinnati and Washington.

If a deal gets done for Orton, it would certainly benefit Miami. If nothing gets done, then Denver is stuck with a good problem to have: plenty of talent at quarterback. The Broncos wouldn’t mind having an insurance plan in place should Tebow struggle if he gets announced as the starter.

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Vancouver Whitecaps: Landon Donovan Ready to Play

When Bruce Arena?s Los Angeles Galaxy take to the pitch, expect team captain Landon Donovan to be ready to start today against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Empire Field in Vancouver, British Columbia (kickoff: 4:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer/TSN).

?I?ve had a couple of days where I feel good in training," Donovan told MLSSoccer?s Luis Bueno. "Knock on wood, if there?s no setbacks, I should be able to contribute [on Saturday].?

Donovan was forced to sit out the friendly with Manchester City and the MLS All-Star game due to a calf injury.

?I hate being home and watching games I should be a part of," Donovan added. "It?s always irked me. It was frustrating to watch the game when you want to be there and contribute. Sometimes it?s the way it goes.

?This team depends on me. They  depend on me to be here and to make plays and to lead. If I?d gone to New York, I?d have had no chance to get proper treatment, I would have had no chance to properly train all week and I wouldn?t have been ready for Saturday.?

Video App Demo: Webmail++

Raise your hand if you've ever found Web Outlook on your Mac ugly and unusable, particularly the "classic" style. Now, if you have an iPhone and have been forced to use this adomination of everything good about web design, you know that the painful gets even more painful when you have to constantly zoom into impossibly small targets. Of course all this would be precluded if you could use your personal iPhone with your company's Exchange server, but that isn't going to happen.

What do you do? First, take a look at Webmail++. This app scrapes off the gunky code in Web Outlook and presents it to you in an iOS-friendly format. For iPhone and iPad, the app does a good job of making Outlook on Webkit far more usable, even touch friendly. Check out the video for some nice touches, like floating menus.

Webmail++ isn't just for Outlook, however. You can connect Webmail++ to a number of email systems like Yahoo but some ISP webmail systems too, including RoadRunner and Comcast.

Boehner Bill Now Even More Dead in the Senate

Really John?

In order to secure enough GOP support for his twice-delayed debt-reduction bill, Speaker John Boehner has altered one crucial detail: A revision mandates that before the debt ceiling can be raised again in six months, the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, which has no chance of passing through Congress (by a two-thirds vote, no less), has to be passed through Congress. That addition should get Boehner's bill through the House later today, but if it was only "mostly dead" in the Senate before, now it's "dead as fucking fried chicken." (Movie references!) [Hill]

New Glendale, CA Apple Store to boast unique features

Yesterday we told you that this Saturday will see the opening of Apple's second Glendale, California store -- one that is only 600 feet away from the other Glendale store. If that alone isn't enough to give the first store feelings of inferiority, perhaps the features of the new store will push it over the edge.

According to 9to5Mac, the new Glendale store will feature a floating Apple logo suspended in the store's glass front. This is the same treatment New York's Fifth Avenue cube store got. The second Glendale store will also have a massive Genius Bar -- a full fifty seats. In addition, the new store will feature a briefing room for business customers and a few tables dedicated entirely to Startup Sessions. To top it off, at 7000 square feet of retail space, the new Glendale store is Apple's largest store in a mall.

Apple is definitely an out with the old, in with the new company. However, at least they decided not to shutter the existing Glendale store. Though it was the second Apple store in the country, I'm sure it's got many years of life left in it. Then again, reports are that it is so busy it could be in business for some time.

Mexico: Democrat: Weak US Laws Hurt Gun-Trafficking Fight In

Washington Post, 29 Jul 2011 - The ranking Democrat on the House committee investigating the controversial federal gun-trafficking operation known as Fast and Furious accused its Republican chairman on Wednesday of stifling discussion of whether U.S. gun laws have contributed to the violence in Mexico. A report released Wednesday by Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) said weak laws impede federal firearms agents trying to counter gun trafficking by Mexican drug cartels. It criticizes Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, for making "efforts to wall off any discussion of the nation's gun laws."

Celebrities Support Celtic Vs Manchester United For Charity

Oxfam's East Africa famine appeal has been announced as the main beneficiary of The Legends Celtic vs Manchester United charity match on August 9.

The drought in this area has already caused devastation and was officially declared a famine in two regions of Somalia by the United Nations on Wednesday 20th July 2011.

The Celtic Charity Fund has taken the decision to make Oxfam’s East Africa Famine Appeal the event’s main charitable beneficiary. With ITV broadcasting the match live from Celtic Park, stars from football and entertainment will be out in force at Celtic Park to back the campaign.

Judith Robertson, Head of Oxfam Scotland, said: "East Africa is facing the worst food crisis seen anywhere in the world for many years – almost 12 million people are at risk right now. Oxfam is there, and we’re already making a huge difference, but we need fans of Celtic, Manchester United and football fans across the world to rally together and help us to do even more.

“The Legends Celtic vs. Manchester United match is going to be an incredible night, and it’s fantastic to see so many players – past and present – and famous fans getting involved. Thanks to them, and the support of the fans, every minute of the match will help us raise money to save lives across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.”

Legends of both clubs and the entertainment world will be taking part in the match. Already confirmed are players such as Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Dwight Yorke, Gordon Strachan, Patrick Kielty, Richard Ashcroft, Ricky Hatton, Nigel Benn, Angus Deayton, Ricky Whittle and Nicky Byrne. Billy Connolly, the Patron of the Celtic Foundation, will be at Celtic Park on the night, and a host of other confirmed as lending support to the event and the fundraising effort are Wayne Rooney, Rod Stewart, Eddie Jordan, Sharleen Spiteri, Dougray Scott and Paolo Nutini.

The line up has swelled further this week with the addition of Manchester United hero Roy Keane. For Keane – who made 326 appearances for Man U scoring 33 goals – the return to Celtic Park will bring back memories of his final season as a player. He returns to Celtic on the eve of his 40th birthday and will surely be looking for a victory to put the icing on his celebrations. The former Ireland international played 10 times for Celtic FC in the 2005/2006 season before retiring on medical grounds.

Truly deserving of his place in The Legends, Alex Ferguson has said of Keane: “Over the years when they start picking the best teams of all time, he will be in there.”

Exec producer Lester Holcombe said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured Roy to play. For many of the fans he’s the greatest midfielder that Man U ever had. He never took any prisoners and we’re fully expecting him to bring that same competitive edge to this game.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said:

TaskRabbit iPhone app lets you crowdsource your tasks

TaskRabbit is a unique service that lets busy people offload their tasks to those willing to do them. It costs a small fee, but you can have your groceries delivered, laundry done and dogs walked before you return home from a busy day at work.

When it launched, the service was web-based only, but TaskRabbit recently developed an iPhone app that lets you manage your tasks on the run. You can create a new task, monitor the progress of a task and even price a task using information based from the TaskRabbit service. It lets you add descriptions using a voice recording or images so the person completing your task knows exactly what to do.

It's an interesting use of modern technology that melds your mundane routine with the power of the crowd. And it's now on the iPhone.

Usher Honors Ted Turner For Charity

Usher presented Ted Turner, founder and chairman of the United Nations Foundation, with the Service Legacy Award at Friday’s World Leadership Conference in Atlanta, hosted by Usher’s New Look Foundation.

The award recognized Turner’s lifetime of leadership in philanthropy, including launching the UN Foundation and in turn its Nothing But Nets campaign?a global, grassroots initiative to end malaria in Africa.

Usher’s New Look has been a long-time partner of Nothing But Nets, including raising awareness and funding last year to send 40,000 life-saving bed nets to families in Ethiopia.

To date, Nothing But Nets has raised more than $35 million to distribute more than 4 million nets to families throughout Africa.

Over 500 young people from around the globe, including the U.K., Africa and Asia, attended the World Leadership Conference and Awards at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta from July 20th – 22nd. The Conference theme, “One World Powered By Service,” focused on two days of substantive workshops and panels led by New Look youth, as well as newsmakers, business leaders, artists, musicians – such as John Rich – journalists and local personalities.

“In order to truly mentor youth leaders, we have to expose them to discussions of global economics, global challenges, and most importantly, global solutions ? which is exactly what the World Leadership Conference does. The Awards will once again celebrate the contributions of individuals who have made a difference in the lives of young people everywhere,” said Usher Raymond, IV, founder of the New Look Foundation.

According to Shawn Wilson, President, New Look Foundation, “We are excited to bring the World Leadership Awards back to Atlanta, and extend them this year to incorporate a Conference where real issues can be discussed and debated, and New Look youth will have a chance to showcase their talents.”

Established in 1999, Usher’s New Look Foundation has mentored over 9,000 youth through over 150,000 hours of training across its four leadership pillars ? talent, education, career and service. Through the development of innovative programs and a culture of consistent evaluation, reflection and refinement, New Look has achieved the gold standard in leadership development and success for youth. Now in its twelfth year, New Look has seen 98% of participating youth graduate high school and go on to college.

Second Glendale, California Apple Store to open Saturday

The second Apple store in Glendale, California will open at 10AM this Saturday -- and it's only 600 feet away from the entrance of the first Glendale store. That makes the two Glendale store the closes Apple stores in the chain, according to ifoAppleStore. Apple's first Glendale store was the second Apple retail store to open and visitors say that it's so packed it's hard to get shopping done, which is probably the reason Apple opened another store so close.

ifoAppleStore also offers some other location trivia about Apple stores. After the Glendale stores, the next two closest Apple stores are the Palo Alto and Stanford stores. They're just 3,738 feet apart. New York City, Las Vegas, and Honolulu are the "most packed" cities with Apple stores. All three cities have three stores within a 4.1 mile radius. The state with the most Apple stores is California, with a whopping 19 stores.

Switcher Profile: Apple's 'halo effect' claims former editor of Windows Magazine

Cult of Mac writer Mike Elgan recently detailed the years-long process that convinced him to switch to the Mac. His story is fairly typical of many switchers: Once a die-hard PC evangelist, his first Apple product was the iPod, which he appreciated for its ease of use. The iPhone eventually convinced him to ditch his BlackBerry, and the iPad was the be-all, end-all of tablet-based computing as far as he was concerned. Finally, using his son's iMac convinced Elgan to switch away from Windows completely.

As I said, it's a fairly typical switcher story... up until you learn that Elgan used to be the editor of Windows Magazine during most of the 1990s. It's hard to be a much more die-hard Windows enthusiast than that without having Microsoft's logo on your business cards and paychecks.

The things that kept Elgan away from the Mac platform are fairly standard: familiarity with Windows and reluctance to learn OS X, not wanting to be dependent on Apple for hardware repairs, and not wanting to self-identify with the "fringe" elements among Mac users. But eventually, actually using Apple's products on a regular basis convinced the former Windows enthusiast to switch. Outgoing PCMag editor Lance Ulanoff is on the mobile side of this roster, as he's switching from a Blackberry to the iPhone.

The "halo effect" of iPod users becoming enamored of Apple's smaller gadgets and switching to the Mac shortly after has been well-documented over the past seven years or so, and with the introduction of the iPhone and iPad this effect has intensified. Apple's efforts to bring some of iOS's functions to the Mac via OS X Lion can be viewed in this light as a shrewd move to amplify this halo effect even farther. People who are already familiar with the iPad's touchscreen interface may take one look at a MacBook Air running full-screen apps or launching applications via Launchpad and think to themselves, "Hmmm, maybe switching to a Mac won't be so hard after all."

Just don't spoil it for those potential switchers by telling them about the Finder.

Michelle Obama Talks Charity In AARP Magazine

First Lady Michelle Obama graces the September/ October cover of AARP The Magazine and talks candidly about her charity work.

Photo: Michelle Obama AARP Magazine

On being a role model for African American girls:
“We did an event for military kids, and there were a lot of African American young girls out there?little black girls who were just proud because they see themselves in somebody who they think is great.

“You can see it in their eyes. You can see it with the hugs and the way they hold on so tight. It matters. So I do embrace it.”

On doing the Dougie at a Let’s Move! event:
“I’ve got little kids. They’re always trying something. And I happen to be very good at dance-mimicking. [Laughs.] For some reason, if I watch somebody do a move for a while, and it’s not too hard or complicated or requires me to throw my leg over my head and flip, I can sort of figure it out.”

On getting involved with Joining Forces:
“My affinity and passion for military families came out of meeting many of these women while campaigning. Their stories moved me.”

“The population that AARP serves has some of the highest numbers of people who volunteer. We’ve got military families who are in need today, and our Joining Forces call to action is a way to use that wonderful time and energy and direct it toward some of these families.

“People don’t have to reinvent themselves. If you live near a base, there are plenty of opportunities, whether it’s throwing a baby shower for expectant mothers or doing things at the schools with military kids or offering to drive a car pool. Those things matter.

“Look within your own community. Look within your church, your kids’ school. Connect with military families and find out what their needs are.”

Celebrities Call On World Leaders For Urgent Horn Of Africa Funds

A group of global artists, activists and business leaders have signed a joint letter urging world leaders to step up their response to the famine in the Horn of Africa. They call on them to act “without reservation, prevarication or equivocation” when they meet at an emergency summit in Rome.

Among the signatories are Annie Lennox, Bob Geldof, Simon Cowell, Richard Curtis, Stephen Fry, Eddie Izzard, Kristin Scott Thomas, and representatives from charities such as Oxfam, the ONE Campaign, Comic Relief, CAFOD, ActionAid, Save the Children and many others.

“As we write, more than 11 million people are suffering the great agony of the worst famine in Africa for many years. It is incomprehensible that in 2011 anyone should die of starvation. $600 million* is needed now for our fellow humans. Not a great sum for the world, even in a time of great economic difficulty for some. Last week European leaders found over hundred times this amount to shore up the euro and bail out banks, yet countries like France, Italy, the Arab States and Germany have so far given miniscule amounts of money to prevent people dying from hunger. Surely this must be unacceptable? A true measure of strength is how one cares for the weak. A true test of power is how one protects the frail.

“Leaders meet today to discuss the food crisis at an emergency meeting in Rome. They all can and should use this meeting to make their pledges and find this money without reservation, prevarication or equivocation. Aid agencies from all over the world are on the ground working with local leaders and helping as many people as possible. Far more can and will be done if the money is found and found fast.

“Beyond the immediate need, action must also be taken to fix the food system. We must see the long-term investment in agriculture to ensure the poorest can feed themselves. Rich countries said they would do this two years ago and shamefully have failed to do so. Too many African leaders have also failed to prioritise agriculture. We all feel the inexorable price rises in our supermarkets. Action on food prices globally can be taken. We know what must be done. We know it is affordable and essential. We have lacked the political will. And that is a failure of leadership.”
