Daughtry To Tour For The Troops

Multi-platinum rock band Daughtry will bring their energetic live show and rock n roll anthems to American service members and their families overseas this holiday season, when they headline Tour for the Troops 2011, presented by the Air Force Reserve.

Photo: Daughtry Tour For The Troops

The band, whose music creates a gleaming showcase for Chris Daughtry's powerful, emotionally resonant voice, will entertain U.S. military personnel at Ramstein Air Base, Germany; Incirlik Air Base, Turkey; Naval Station Rota in Spain, and a number of deployed locations in Southwest Asia from Nov. 30 to Dec. 10. Joining them will be comedian Gabriel Iglesias, along with the Band of the Air Force Reserve.

The tour coincides with the release of Daughtry’s highly anticipated third album, Break the Spell, which came out five years to the day that the band released its self-titled platinum debut. Our servicemen and women stationed overseas will be among the first to see them perform their newest songs, including their latest single, Crawling Back to You, an uplifting and hopeful song on its way to becoming the band’s fifth No.1 hit. In addition, Daughtry has garnered 4 Grammy nominations, sold over 7 million albums and played sold out concerts around the world.

“We’re extremely excited about Daughtry performing for our troops this holiday season, and to have the tour coincide with the release of their new album is even more exciting” said Chief Master Sergeant Glen Barnes, Chief of Advertising for the U.S. Air Force Reserve and the tour producer. “Daughtry is a favorite among our young service members, and the band members are eager to meet our troops and put on a show they won’t soon forget.”

Gabriel Iglesias is best known for his shows, I’m Not Fat..I’m Fluffy and Hot & Fluffy as well as TV appearances on Comedy Central, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, the Late Late Show, Good Morning America and many others. Everyone can relate to his hilarious mix of parody and characterizations.

Performing as the opening act will be the Band of the Air Force Reserve playing well known pop and contemporary favorites.

The Air Force Reserve presents Tour for the Troops to entertain and boost morale of our troops of all branches. Past performers include Kid Rock, Tim McGraw, Martin Lawrence, Ludacris, Blake Shelton, Jay Leno and Carlos Mencia to name a few.

Bernie Fine: Jim Boeheim Must Meet the Same Fate as Joe Paterno

How can Jim Boeheim not be removed amidst these allegations that look more like facts with each passing day?

I think it is an unfortunate and sad inevitability, but a necessary evolution out of an era of collegiate sports that makes gods out of legendary coaches and potential victims out of the young people they are contracted to mentor and protect.

It certainly appears that Boeheim may have been less aware of his assistant's alleged behavior, than was Joe Paterno of the alleged actions of Jerry Sandusky. Still, if true, it is almost impossible that he never caught wind of such a thing.

Syracuse Chief of Police, Frank Fowler says they knew about the allegations of child molestation as far back as 2002, when his predecessor was in charge.

Police did not follow up or generate a report because according the report from KTLA:

The detective told Davis the statute of limitations had run out so authorities could not make an arrest, but he urged him to turn over additional information about other victims.

"It was decided that unless the victim met with the detective or the victim was able to provide names of other victims, then an investigation would not be initiated," Fowler said in a statement.

Those conditions were not met so an investigation was never initiated and a report never created.

Now, because of this technicality, an alleged predator gets to go free and hurt more children. The big question in this situation, is how much did Boeheim know? For a man so entrenched in a program for nearly 40 years to be completely oblivious to these allegations seems unrealistic.

He even said in a previous comment

"This is a kid that came up with all this stuff and it was all looked into for four months. The only new thing is his (relative) has come forward."

That proves he knew something, media outlets, including ESPN, knew something. It is impossible that Boeheim was completely unaware.

Is Boeheim a monster? Probably not, but he is responsible for the actions of his subordinates, especially if it affects or is related to the basketball program.

He supported him, and now, if true, he must pay the price for his lack of action, just as Paterno did.

RIM's Mobile Fusion to offer iPhone security

With its smartphones becoming increasingly unpopular and its PlayBook tablet a total flop, Research In Motion (RIM) is searching for a way to improve revenues. Now the company has come up with an idea that might help it remain relevant in the enterprise market. RIM has announced Mobile Fusion, a new device management tool that allows corporate IT departments to perform a number of security functions on mass deployments of iPhones, iPads, and Android smartphones.

Some of the features that will be provided when Mobile Fusion arrives are already available for iOS devices, including the ability to remotely wipe or lock devices that are lost or stolen. However, Mobile Fusion is also set to provide additional capabilities such as allowing IT departments to set password rules and control what apps are installed on a device.

RIM hopes to bring its enterprise-quality security to the iOS realm in the first quarter of 2012 and an undisclosed price that is said to be "competitive." The Mobile Fusion product runs next to existing BlackBerry Enterprise Servers behind corporate firewalls, and RIM seems confident that the product will catch the attention of companies who are deploying iOS and Android devices in large numbers.

Stars Join Virtual March Against Bullying

To mark the start of Anti-Bullying Week 2012, UK charity BeatBullying is mobilising hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world, together with celebrities, politicians, charities, businesses and communities to launch The Big March 2012, the world’s first global virtual march for children’s rights.

Beatbullying is calling for people around the world to support The Big March 2012, which will take place on January 31st 2012: from Manchester to Mumbai, from Naples to New Orleans, from Jerusalem to Johannesburg, and from Budapest to Brasilia.

Predicted to last up to two days, the march will culminate with the delivery of a petition to the United Nations Building in New York; asking the United Nations to explicitly enshrine ‘bullying’ in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This will help to protect children all over the world from the pain and distress of bullying and harassment. If successful, it will be the first time that the Convention has been updated in over 10 years.

Governments and world leaders who have ratified the Convention are bound to it by international law and are therefore obliged to introduce and implement measures and legislation which serve to protect children. The addition of ‘bullying’ to the UNCRC will give weight and legitimacy to the demands of children, families, schools, and communities who want to build a world where bullying is unacceptable.

The Big March 2012, builds on the success of 2010’s award-winning campaign that saw a million parents, teachers, young people, celebrities and MPs sign up to support the UK campaign. Beatbullying delivered a petition to a virtual 10 Downing Street, asking for the Government to protect children and young people from all forms of bullying and harassment. It resulted in an offline deputation with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, where Beatbullying delivered its recommendations.

With over 135,000 supporters already signed up to The Big March 2012, including celebrities as diverse as Katherine Jenkins, Twiggy, Sir Michael Parkinson, Jedward, top girl band The Saturdays as well as Beatbullying ambassadors Pixie Lott and Aston Merrygold, Beatbullying anticipates over two million avatars, all representing actual protesters, taking the world wide web by storm by the time the march commences in January.

UK brands and charities such as Nominet Trust, Barry M, Robinson Fruit Shoot, Orange and Girlguiding UK have already been joined by global organisations, including Facebook, Universal Music, Stardoll and Habbo, with Beatbullying anticipating the support of numerous more international brands, business and third sector groups to allow The Big March 2012 to make a stand on their websites next year.

Emma-Jane Cross, CEO of Beatbullying, said:

“Violence amongst young people across the world is at epidemic levels. We have a child protection crisis on our hands, and we have a duty as global citizens to unite and insist that world leaders, politicians, communities and families stand up and take action.

“Thousands of young people have taken their own lives as a direct result of being bullied. This must stop.

“I believe that every child has the right to a life that is safe, dignified and free from violence and bullying.

“We’re asking for the support of parents, teachers, young people, businesses and communities from all corners of the globe on The Big March 2012.

“Together we can make a difference to children’s rights with the largest globally connected digital take over the world has ever seen.”

Aston Merrygold, Beatbullying ambassador, said:

“Making someone feel scared or threatened is disgusting but bullying happens the world over and it is wrong.

“I never thought I would be affected by bullying but I was, and as a Beatbullying ambassador I know how important it is that young people get the support available at CyberMentors.org.uk and know that they are not alone.

“Bullies mustn’t get away with it. We need to make sure the world’s children are safe from bullying and abuse, so this year I’m taking part in Beatbullying’s The Big March 2012, to stop bullying around the world for good ? join my avatar and march with thousands of others on the world’s first global virtual march.”

With more corporate, charity and celebrity partners set to be announced, organisations interested in partnering with The Big March 2012, can get involved by contacting the charity directly on 0208 771 3377/ hello@beatbullying.org, and those who want to create their own avatar to join the march on the 31st January 2012, can sign up at www.beatbullying.org/bigmarch.

iFixit offers transparent rear panels for iPhone 4S

iFixit released transparent rear panels for the iPhone 4 several months ago, which put the surprisingly attractive innards of Apple's smartphone on display. Apple must have tweaked the internals of the iPhone 4S just barely enough for that panel to be incompatible, because iFixit has now released a new rear panel specifically engineered for the iPhone 4S.

For a limited time at a price of US$29.95, iFixit is selling a kit that includes the rear panel, a "liberation kit" that includes the special "pentalobe" screwdriver necessary to remove the existing panel, a screen protector, and a "thirsty bag" that will dry out your phone if it has an unfortunate encounter with liquid. iFixit will continue to sell the back panel by itself for the same $29.95 once the promotion ends.

Swapping out the rear panel on an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S is incredibly easy once you have the proper tools at hand; I swapped out the panel on my old iPhone 4 in less than five minutes earlier this year. If you've cracked your iPhone's rear panel and are looking for a somewhat quirky replacement, iFixit's transparent panel might be what you need.

Help Stop The Tiger Trade In China

The Environmental Investigation Agency and a number of stars are endorsing a new petition calling on Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on tiger trade.

The petition has been organised by TigerTime, an initiative of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation which has garnered mass public and celebrity support to raise awareness of the plight of the world’s last remaining wild tigers and campaign to reverse its decline.

The petition urges: “I appeal to Premier Wen Jiabao to send a clear message to his government, calling for an end to all tiger trade within China. This is to include a call for a zero tolerance policy applied to all trade of all parts and derivatives of tiger and other protected Asian big cats, from all sources.”

It has been launched almost a year to the day since Wen Jiabao, at the 2010 International Tiger Conservation Forum in St Petersburg, promised the world his country would “vigorously combat poaching, trade and smuggling of tiger products”.

However, China has refused to answer questions about the implementation of its controversial 2007 Skin Registration Scheme, allowing tiger and leopard skins from ‘legal origins’, including those from captive-bred big cats, to be registered, labelled and sold.

A lack of transparency as to how authorities determine the legality of skins, coupled with inadequate enforcement and growing corruption, is creating a smokescreen for the illegal trade in tiger and leopard skins and derivatives in China.

?"EIA has often worked with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation as a fellow member of the Species Survival Network and is pleased to wholeheartedly endorse its TigerTime petition," said EIA Lead Campaigner Debbie Banks. “China has had more than enough time to begin putting its house in order along the lines of Wen Jiabao’s promises in Russia, but instead of shutting down the tiger farms and embracing a zero-tolerance policy on the trade in tiger and big cat skins and derivatives, it instead seems dead set on heading in the wrong direction.”

The TigerTime initiative has secured the support of a large number of household names since launching in June, including Samantha Fox, Sir Paul McCartney, Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Parkinson, Susan Sarandon, Anjelica Huston, Jeremy Irons, Paula Abdul, Neil Gaiman and Joan Jett.

“Signing this petition will help us to put real pressure on the Chinese Government,” says Samantha Fox. “The more people that sign, the more chance that they will listen. Please do this now, to prevent the loss of the last 3200 tigers that are left in the wild”

?The TigerTime ‘Ban the Tiger Trade’ petition can be found at www.bantigertrade.com.

Insanely Great launches made-in-USA iPhone accessories with Cyber Monday deal

Whether your iPhone has been with you for years or you just picked one up this weekend during the holiday shopping rush, you're facing the same problem either way: getting it to stay where you put it, in the car or on your desk. Scores of companies offer lots of different "stick it and forget it" solutions to this challenge, but one newcomer is putting together some innovative and attractive products for iPhone car/counter mounting -- and doing it entirely in the USA, from design to hands-on manufacturing.

Insanely Great Products' launch line includes six different mounting/stand solutions, all but one involving a powerful suction cup to attach the iPhone (or other flat-back device) to the mount. The Jack (image, right) and the Scooter are designed for desktop use, while the Willy (top image) and the Traveler can serve either in the car or in stationary settings.

The light and flexible Clip-n-Go combines the suction cup with a customized binder clip for easy air vent attachment of a cased or naked phone, while the anodized aluminum Norm uses the same binder clip with side arms to hold a case-free phone to the dashboard vent.

While the products are affordable (most of the line costs between US$10 and $20, with the aluminium Norm coming in at $35) they're set apart from most of the accessory market by their made-in-the-USA pedigree. IGP was founded with the intention of doing all manufacturing domestically; currently, all the products are assembled by hand (from US-sourced materials) in the company's Menlo Park facility.

In fact, every IGP employee spends at least part of every day filling customer orders by making products themselves. This agile/all-hands manufacturing process is intended to help keep the entire team connected to the products; IG is also able to create customized or branded versions of all the items in the line, on request.

It might seem a bit presumptuous for any new enterprise to call itself Insanely Great, but in this case the company at least comes by it honestly. IGP's marketing lead/co-founder Richard Ford spent several years at Apple in leadership roles on the product teams that built most of the Internet underpinnings in Mac OS 9. The other co-founder, company president Jeff Osborn, was formerly a VP at mega-ISP UUnet.

For today, Cyber Monday, the company is offering 50% off three of its products -- the Jack, the Scooter and the Willy -- as long as you buy them in blue (the Monday blues, so clever) rather than the full line of colors shown above.

Insanely Great launches made-in-USA iPhone accessories with Cyber Monday deal originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 28 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Vivienne Westwood Invests Funds In Rainforest Charity Campaign

Dame Vivienne Westwood is investing her own funds to launch a 7 million pound fundraising campaign supporting the rainforest charity Cool Earth, founded by Frank Field MP, to demonstrate how rapidly money can be deployed into rainforest programs.

The action is to expose the World Bank’s expenditure failings as a staggering 90% of funds pledged to halt deforestation remains unspent.

The campaign called – No Fun Being Extinct – will run for 18 months and is supported by fashion names such as Kate Moss, Lily Cole and Sadie Frost. The aim is to help secure three of the world’s most endangered forest.

Former Minister Frank Field founded the rainforest charity Cool Earth in 2007 as a vehicle to allow ordinary people to leapfrog governments and take immediate action in the fight against climate change by protecting rainforests. The conservation method is a ground up approach, which works with indigenous communities to make rainforest trees of greater economic value left standing than cut down.

Despite a growing number of research papers highlighting community led management as the most effective way to keep rainforest standing over traditional reserves, many communities are not receiving pledged funds.

The Climate Investment Fund dedicated $600 million (390 million) to the Forest Investment Programme (FIP) to “tackle drivers of deforestation” with UK tax payers providing the most generous contribution ? almost four years on, only $15 million (10 million) has been spent, all of which has gone on administration and advisors.

Frank Field founded Cool Earth as a result of his utter despair at governments’ failure to solve the problem of deforestation, “The lack of action in spite of such generous funding is a real disgrace. It shows that political will is just as important as money.”

Fashion designer and environmental campaigner, Vivienne Westwood, has been working closely with Cool Earth over the last 3 years, “Cool Earth has a plan to save the rainforest. If we don’t save the rainforest forget it! I am personally supporting Cool Earth and investing in our future. I’m inviting anyone interested in saving our beautiful world to join me.”

Frank and Vivienne are calling on the government to invest in community-led forestry management, which has been proven to be the most effective way to halt deforestation. Vivienne is presenting a report to No. 10 to showing how her funds have been spent to show that an effective mechanism to halt deforestation does exist.

Cool Earth has protected over 2.5 million acres of vulnerable rainforest since its launch in 2007, which has cost just 1.75 million with less than 10% spent on administration. This is because the charity has worked from the ground-up with local communities who have a clear interest in keeping the forest standing. This works out as costing just a half of a percent of the FIP’s budget.

Vivienne will also be calling on the public to help protect trees at Cool Earth’s new website launched on November 28th called ‘No Fun Being Extinct’. Individuals can save as little as 3 trees for 3 on the website at www.nofunbeingextinct.org. Every tree makes a difference.

With Christmas fast approaching these are the essential ‘money can’t buy’ presents for someone you love. Top tip: if there’s a radio you’re particularly after, why not add it your ‘watch list’ so you don’t miss out!

Many people do not understand how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, or the reality of living with HIV today. People living with HIV can also still face stigma and discrimination from society.
