Eric Hagg to Cleveland Browns: 2011 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Eric Hagg is a classic case of a player who doesn't wow in drills, but shows flashes of brilliance on the field.

Unfortunately for Hagg, a poor showing at the Senior Bowl and the Combine really hurt his draft stock and with 2010 being his only truly impressive season, he slide down draft boards like many players before him.

At 6'1" and 209 lbs Hagg runs in the 4.5-4.6 range depending on the day of the week, but his game film shows a player who's simply quicker once the action is for real.

With five interceptions in 2010, Hagg was instrumental in leading Nebraska to one of the top pass defenses in the country. It's why he was voted by his teammates as the Cornhuskers MVP. He may not have the speed and range scouts look for, but Hagg is a gamer.

The fact that he fell all the way to the back end of the seventh round is very surprising and there's a good chance he ends up sticking on the Brown's roster.

Shipwreck medicine

Ancient text

Alain Touwaide looks at some of the ancient texts he has used in his research

DNA extracted from 2,000-year-old plants recovered from an Italian shipwreck could offer scientists the key to new medicines.

Carrots, parsley and wild onions were among the samples preserved in clay pills on board the merchant trading vessel that sank around 120 BC. It's believed the plants were used by doctors to treat intestinal disorders among the ship's crew.

Such remedies are described in ancient Greek texts, but this is the first time the medicines themselves have been discovered.

"Medicinal plants have been identified before, but not a compound medicine, so this is really something new," says Alain Touwaide, director of the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions, which has the world's largest digital database of medical manuscripts.

“We extract the information from these texts so that scientists can see if they can make shortcuts to pharmacological discoveries”

Alain Touwaide Director, Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions

Prof Touwaide is working with scientists at the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum, who carried out the DNA analysis. They discovered traces of carrot, parsley, alfalfa, celery, wild onion, radish, yarrow and hibiscus contained in the ancient pills.

The pills, which researchers believe were diluted with vinegar or water to make them easier to ingest, were preserved inside tin boxes and were the size of coins.

"I was always wondering if the texts were only theoretical notions without practical application," he says. "Now we know they were applied."

In May, Prof Touwaide's conclusions, based on the DNA findings and his own study of medicinal texts, will be formally presented to an international gathering of archaeologists, historians of medicines and other experts in Rome.

"What is remarkable is that we have written evidence [from the ancient Greeks] of what plants were used for which disorders," says Alisa Machalek, a science writer for the National Institutes of Health, one of the world's leading research centres.

A copy of one of the ancient manuscripts containing descriptions of the plants contained in the pillsResearchers have studied ancient texts with descriptions of the plants contained inside the pills

"This research is interesting, especially for medical historians, because it confirms that what we eat affects our bodies."

Prof Touwaide hopes his research will help to develop modern treatments.

"We extract the information from these texts so that scientists can see if they can make shortcuts to pharmacological discoveries," he says.

"We re-purpose ancient medical information and jump from the past to the future."

For instance, the Roman statesman Cato recommended eating broccoli to stay healthy and Prof Touwaide has found references to the Greek physician Galen using it in the 2nd Century AD to treat intestinal cancer.

Prof Touwaide says modern research is now under way to isolate a compound found in broccoli that may be a source for the treatment of cancer today.

"This is a huge field in chemistry and pharmaceutical science," says Ms Machalek.

"Native Americans chewed on willow bark to relieve pain - now we pop open a bottle and chew on aspirin which contains similar compounds. Taxol, a cancer medicine, is derived from the bark of the Pacific Yew."

To understand the significance of the plants contained in the 2,000-year-old pills, Prof Touwaide studied a number of medical works, including the Hippocratic Collection.

The collection is one of the earliest sets of Greek writings still in existence and is attributed to Hippocrates, considered to be the founder of Western medicine.

He cross-referenced those findings with other works, such as the Encyclopaedia of Natural Substances, written in the 1st Century AD by Dioscorides.

Microscopic images of pill fragments amalgamated with clayThe dark spots above are microscopic plant fragments found embedded in clay on board the wrecked ship

Dioscorides noted that "the large onion is sharper than the round onion. All onions are pungent and apt to cause flatulence. They stimulate the appetite. They are thirst making. They cleanse the bowel."

"They are good for opening outlets for various secretions as well as haemorrhoids, and they are used as suppositories, pilled and dipped in olive oil," Dioscorides wrote.

A significant percentage of commercial medicines are derived from natural sources, but the active compound has been isolated, concentrated, standardised and packaged into measured doses.

The shift toward synthetic chemical medicines occurred in the 20th Century, but according to Mark Blumenthal, the founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council, there is renewed interest in the medicinal benefits of natural foods - including those found in the pills.

"A lot of ancient plants have modern functions," he says.

"There's a lot of marketing going on for so-called functional foods - foods with high levels of antioxidants, for improving the cardiovascular system or reducing the risk of cancer.

"Hibiscus tea is growing in popularity and research shows that it lowers blood pressure. Garlic and to some degree onions, continue to have cardiovascular benefits and reduce the build-up of plaque."

But Prof Touwaide says the traditional cures based on plants and minerals are in danger of being forgotten.

He says part of the problem is that too few people now study classical Greek, Latin or Arabic and there are not enough experts to interpret the original texts.

Prof Touwaide is proficient in 12 languages and has spent years collecting his library of 15,000 books on plants and

2011 NFL Draft Results: Did Bills Finally Have Solid Draft with Dareus and Co?

2011 NFL Draft Results Did the Bills Finally Get a Draft Right With Marcell Dareus and Co?

It's been 11 long years since the Buffalo Bills sniffed playoff air.

The main reason behind this treacherous postseason absence has been the inability to make the right selections come draft time.

This year, the Bills got a player in Marcell Dareus that represents great value at No. 3 overall and fills a huge need for the defense. He can play anywhere across the line, and he coupled with Kyle Williams should begin to wreak havoc in the AFC.

MUST READ: Report Cards For the First Three Rounds

Aaron Williams and Kelvin Sheppard were the next two picks, and both have legitimate chances to be starters from Day One.

Williams was graded as first-round prospect by some and Sheppard has the size and instincts to play inside in the 3-4 alignment, something the Bills desperately needed as the worst run defense in the NFL last year.

They added more inside linebacking and cornerback depth in the later rounds, which tells me GM Buddy Nix has put an onus on fixing Buffalo's biggest problem.

With Dareus and two potential starters in the first three picks, it looks like Buffalo not only has gotten more physical and nasty on defense, but have had quite the solid draft.

Finally.

Ryan Gosling Makes Charity Trip To Eastern Congo

Actor and activist Ryan Gosling recently traveled with the ENOUGH Project to eastern Congo to witness first-hand the effects of war there.

From the scenes he captured, Ryan created a video for the ENOUGH Project’s “Raise Hope for Congo” campaign working to create a permanent solution to Congo’s war. He also wrote a op-ed with ENOUGH Project’s co-founder John Prendergast, which has been posted at the Huffington Post website.

“We recently traveled together to Congo, where the deadliest war in the world is occurring,” they write. "It’s a war which most people know nothing about, despite the fact that we’re all directly connected to it. Armed groups are fighting over the lucrative minerals that power our cell phones and laptops, leaving a trail of human destruction that has no equal globally since World War II.

“We spent most of our time in Congo talking with survivors of this silent war. We wanted to know what they experienced, and what messages they might have for those of us who have come to rely on cell phones and laptops that inadvertently connect us to Congo.

“Marie is a rape survivor twice over. She has overcome her suffering to found a women’s organization that helps others who have survived sexual crimes. We asked her what message she would have for electronics companies. “Please stop this bloody business,” she pleaded. “You are fueling conflict. Families are being torn apart. Women are being raped. Communities are being destroyed so armed groups can profit from mines. Companies should stop supporting this and do ethical business.”

“The conflict in Congo has left millions homeless, fleeing from their villages after they have been burnt to the ground or looted by armed groups. In a camp for internally displaced people, we met Mapendo, a young woman who survived an attack on her village in which members of an armed militia went door to door raping women and killing men. In reply to our questions, she said starkly, “There is no difference between the phone companies and the people doing the killing here in Congo.”

“The president of one refugee camp told us, “The problem in Congo is greed. They should prosecute the greedy people, wherever they come from, who benefit from illegal minerals.” A young man living in the camp named Innocent who had been driven from his home by an armed group taking over a nearby mine concluded, “The people that are doing this to me are the people who are making the phones that use these minerals.”

“Esther, another displaced camp resident, challenged us in a unique way: “I want the users of these minerals to come live in these camps with us so they can understand what we are going through.” Finally, a 14 year old girl whom we befriended spoke with a level of clarity well beyond her years when she told us, “Anyone who buys a cell phone should question their conscience and insist on fair trade.”

“The truth of what we heard from survivors is rooted in simple economics. Profits made from this illicit minerals trade arise from market demand for such minerals. If consumers demand conflict-free products, then companies will eventually meet that demand, in turn cratering the market for minerals mined through violence.

“Luckily, instead of just feeling guilty or even boycotting consumer electronics, there are things you can do, positive steps that will have an impact on this deadly trade in conflict minerals.

First, you can join the growing movement of people across the U.S. and beyond who are raising hope for Congo by directly contacting the 21 biggest electronics companies and demanding conflict-free products at http://www.raisehopeforcongo.org/rankings. The Enough Project ranked the top companies on the actions they have taken on conflict minerals to date and found that two-thirds of them have done little to nothing. Many of them assert their conflict-free intentions, but with a few exceptions their actions haven’t equaled their rhetoric. The bottom line here is this: if you demand conflict-free products, they will supply them, just like with the blood diamonds campaign that ended that deadly trade and helped stop three wars in West Africa.

“Second, if you are connected to a college or high school, you can join the national drive for conflict-free campuses, in which students are leading efforts to convince school administrators to demand conflict-free products as well.

“Congo is the deadliest war in the world for a reason. For the last 150 years, the world has taken whatever it wanted from this country, from people who were enslaved for America’s plantations, to ivory for our jewelry, to rubber for our automobile industry, to uranium for our atomic bombs, to today’s conflict minerals for our cell phones, laptops and other products. Finally, a global people’s movement has begun to be formed to stop this history of destructive extraction.”

Lady Gaga Launches Celebrity Charity Facebook Challenges For Robin Hood

Written by Tim Saunders

Lady Gaga will be performing at the annual Robin Hood Foundation Gala on May 9 – and to celebrate, the charity has launched two Facebook initiatives.

Just by “liking” the Robin Hood Facebook page and inviting your friends, you could win free tickets to the private show in New York City next month.

The second initiative is via Lady Gaga’s own Facebook page, where you can help choose which of five charities should receive a cut of $1 million from Robin Hood. All five charities will get some of the money – the winning charity will receive $500,000, the next will get $250,000 and so on – and it’s up to you to decide who gets the most.

According to Robin Hood, NYC’s largest poverty-fighting organization: “Right now, 4,000 New York City teens are living on the street. Some aged out of the foster care system, some ran away from abusive homes, and others were rejected by their families because of their sexual orientation. Robin Hood’s programs offer a lifeline to the city’s most vulnerable teens, helping them get off the streets and build stable lives. We believe every teen deserves a chance at success. We hope that you do, too.”

Hours after the white iPhone went on sale internationally and a lengthy downtime, it is now available through the US Apple Store, as well as AT&T and Verizon's websites. As mentioned earlier, the handset should be available at Apple's brick-and-mortar stores when they open later today. Apple's front and iPhone pages have yet to be updated with the now-available status of the phone, but will most likely mirror the "finally" ads that are appearing on AT&T and Verizon's sites.

Scosche freeKEY Bluetooth keyboard: flexible and splashproof

Have you ever wanted to spill water onto your Bluetooth keyboard? Of course not. But that doesn't mean that some day you might not accidentally dump an icy glass of sweet tea onto the keyboard or have one of the kids decide to give Mr. Keyboard a bath in the toilet.

Schosche's new freeKEY Bluetooth keyboard (US$59.99) doesn't mind spills, although a swim in the loo might prove too much. The chiclet-type keyboard rolls up like a frightened armadillo for compact travel and is made of a water-resistant silicone material. When it gets wet, simply shake it off. Chiclet keyboards have been known to be typing-unfriendly in the past, so you may want to try one out at a local retailer before buying.

The freeKEY is available now, works with all of your Bluetooth-equipped devices, including the iPad 2, and comes with a retractable USB to micro-USB cable for recharging. There's video on the next page, showing the freeKEY in action as it gets splashed and rolled up into a snug cylinder. I'm hoping to try one out soon for a full TUAW review just to see how comfortable the keyboard is, and to see how the freeKEY works after spilling a Margarita on it.

2011 NFL Draft: Final First Round Mock, Seahawks Trade First Pick

There has been speculation brewing on what the Seattle Seahawks will do with their first pick. My Seahawk's seven-round mock draft got under the skin of the anti-Locker crowd, but come on...if Jake Locker is on the board at No. 25, the Seahawks almost have to gamble that his issues in college were due to the fact that the offense around him was just plain bad.

I still don't see Seattle taking a QB until late in the draft.  They will work on other positions to build the core of their team and look to bring in a QB in free agency (Carson Palmer) and draft a QB in 2012.

There are a few trades sprinkled around in this draft, two of them involving the Seahawks.  Here are some thoughts on what could unfold:

1. Carolina Panthers: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama:

2. Cincinnati Bengals: Cam Newton, QB Auburn: The Bengals move up to grab Newton.

3. Buffalo Bills:  Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M

4. Denver Broncos:  Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn: The guy they want AND a second round pick.

5. Arizona Cardinals:  Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

6. Cleveland Browns:  A.J. Green, WR, Georgia

7. San Francisco 49ers: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

8. Tennessee Titans: Jake Locker, QB, Washington

9. Dallas Cowboys: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

10. Washington Redskins: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

11. Houston Texans: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina

12. Kansas City Chiefs: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: It is worth parting with a second-round pick to get the WR they need.

13. Detroit Lions: Tyron Smith, OT, Southern California

14. St. Louis Rams: Cameron Jordan, DE, California

15. Miami Dolphins: Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

17. New England Patriots:  Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida

18. San Diego Chargers: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

19. New York Giants: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

21. Minnesota Vikings: Ryan Mallett, QB Arkansas: The QB they wanted was off the board, allowing them to trade down and take their second choice.

22. Indianapolis Colts: Derek Sherrod, OT Mississippi State

23. Philadelphia Eagles: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado: This pick frees Seattle up to trade options.

24. New Orleans Saints: Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois

25. Baltimore Ravens: Aaron Williams, CB Texas: Concerned over losing their CB to Seattle, the Ravens send the fourth-round pick they should have given to Seattle for Josh Wilson.

26. Green Bay Packers: Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona: The Packers are down to one person they desperately need to improve their defense, so they send their 2012 second-round pick to Seattle to make sure they get him.

27. Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame

28. New England Patriots: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

29. Chicago Bears: Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple

30. New York Jets: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Benjamin Ijalana, OT/G, Villanova

32. Seattle Seahawks: Marvin Austin, DT North Carolina: Seattle picks up a third and fourth-round pick and gets a DT that figured to be a top 15 choice prior to getting suspended.

Wrexham FC's Racecourse groundThe owners say they have already invested millions of pounds in their support of the club

Wrexham Football Club's £200,000 tax bill has been paid off, clearing the way for the club to take part in the end-of-season promotion play-offs.

At a news conference at the Racecourse, it was announced the debt had been cleared through a combination of donations and loans.

It is understood Blue Square Bet Premier officials wanted to see the debt cleared before Wrexham compete in next week's games.

Wrexham are due to face Luton on 5 May.

The second leg will be played away a few days later.

The final will be played at the City of Manchester Stadium on 21 May with a place in the Football League at stake.

The combination of donations and loans which cleared the debt involve contributions from club chairman and co-owner Ian Roberts, former MP and AM John Marek - a candidate in next week's assembly elections - and an anonymous donor, who is a friend of co-owner Geoff Moss and the club itself.

Wrexham Supporters' Trust (WST) earlier this week launched a £1m bid to buy the club in partnership with private investors and individual fans.

But fears for the future of the Conference outfit have been fuelled by a winding-up petition over a £200,000 tax bill.

Dr Marek, who is understood to be providing a £50,000 interest-free loan, had said on Wednesday: "I'm providing a loan and several other people are doing the same.

"It's being sorted out today and it's just a matter of dotting the i's and crossing the t's before the money is paid over tomorrow [Thursday]."

Other assembly election candidates welcomed the development.

Bill Brereton the Liberal Democrat candidate for Wrexham said: "I'm happy to work alongside politicians of all parties and the community to ensure that the club survives. The Racecourse is an asset as an international stadium in Wrexham.

"All parties in the council have been working quietly behind the scenes towards maintaining the stadium."

Labour candidate Lesley Griffiths said: "I am sure that every Wrexham supporter will be relieved if the current financial problems do not prevent the football Club proceeding to the playoffs.

"The players and management need to be able to concentrate on working towards playing league football next season, without too many distractions off the pitch."

Plaid Cymru candidate Marc Jones said: "I am very pleased the tax debt has been cleared, but it should never have come to this, especially at this late stage. "

He said it was now "more urgent for us to have proper community ownership of Wrexham Football Club...and that's why I'm backing the Wrexham Supporters' Trust's bid 100%".

The supporters' trust has been working on the wider ownerhip issue.

It called on fans to back plans to put the club into community ownership in a leaflet at Monday's game against Tamworth at Wrexham's Racecourse ground.

Terry Heath of the trust said: "We're making good progress and money is starting to come in quite well. It's not just the fans from the club itself, we're also inviting other peop

LeBron James: Helps Heat Eliminate Sixers, Can They Beat Boston Celtics?

LeBron James and Miami Heat Teammates Finish Off Sixers

The Big Three got the job done on Wednesday night, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh chipped in 26 points apiece and LeBron James was only two assists shy of a triple-double despite a poor shooting night, as Miami won the game 97-91.

What's next for the Heat?

A much more talented and defensively intense Boston Celtics team.

There's really no time celebrate for King James and company, if they're serious about making a title run it's on to their next opponent.  The same opponent won the last two games of their series on the road against the New York Knicks in decisive fashion.

Considering the Heat needed two play their top two stars Wade and James for the entire game in order defeat the Sixers by five points, they're surely be in for a tough series against Boston.

With Boston appearing to be fine-tuning their game just in time for the playoffs, it's time for Heat to do the same. Otherwise their second-round matchup will go in Boston's favor.

Prediction: Boston in 6

Is stenography a dying art?

Nuremberg war trialsStenographers take down Hermann Goering's testimony during the Nuremburg war crimes trials

Court stenographers are being phased out in England and Wales with the last contract - at the Old Bailey - set to expire in March 2012. But what is a stenographer and are they no longer needed?

The "speed of speech" is often defined as 180 words per minute (wpm).

Anyone who has ever tried to take a note in longhand at that speed will tell you it is impossible.

Many journalists who learn shorthand struggle to hit 100 wpm.

So the only way to keep up is through a stenographer - a skilled professional using a stenotype machine.

The machine has a minimal keyboard, which omits key letters like i, m or n, and by hitting a combination of keys - known as chords - they can produce the missing letters or phonetic sounds like "th" or "sh".

"Stenographers vary greatly. The difference between the best and the rest is like a concert pianist and a pub pianist," says Mary Sorene, a stenographer who started work at the Old Bailey in 1971.

To increase their speed, stenographers learn hundreds of shortforms and memorise chords in certain orders so their hands can move swiftly from left to right.

"I have memorised lots of shortforms, for example MORJ, is My Lord and the jury," explains Sally Lines, a court stenographer at the Old Bailey.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

But the Ministry of Justice has decided to dispense with court stenographers and replace them with a Digital Audio Recording and Transcription and Storage (Darts) service. It believes the new system will be cheaper and deliver good results.

But stenographers don't believe it's a wise decision.

"The strength of stenography is that if you are listening to something on a tape it's hard to distinguish tiny nuances. Sometimes you need to almost lip-read. Sometimes there is patois or slang or you need to know the context of the case," Ms Lines says.

Some judges are believed to be unhappy with the changes too but so far none have put their heads above the parapet.

He says: "In important cases - anything higher than a traffic court - we really need a human there.

2011 NFL Mock Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars Select Ryan Kerrigan with 16th Pick

2011 NFL mock draft: Jags hope to solve DE problem with Purdue standout

Jacksonville used its first four picks a year ago in the draft on its defensive front and it still isn't good enough.

So, why not try again? Ryan Kerrigan is still on the board and is one of the more consistent and stable players heading into draft day.

Kerrigan's stock has been stable throughout the offseason. If anything, it increased with his 4.67-second 40 time. That was second among the first round linemen prospects.

Kerrigan summed up in one sentence...Ryan Kerrigan is an intelligent, ball-hawking defensive end that gives you 110 percent on every single play.

He is known for his outstanding motor that never quits. It is hard to pass on a guy like this. Even though he may not be the most talent defensive end, his effort is what gets him to the quarterback half the time.

Kerrigan also is known to go for the football when tackling. He recorded a conference record 14 fumbles forced in his career.

NFL Draft 2011: Will the New York Giants Draft a Quarterback in the Late Rounds?

This article is being produced out of pure frustration of being questioned that the Giants would only take a quarterback if hell was freezing over.

Am I missing something? Isn't quarterback the most important position on the field, and in turn, isn't the backup quarterback one of the most important backup positions?

The Giants are set for the 2011 season in terms of this position; Sage Rosenfels has proven to be a fine backup in the league, and when he was on the Texans last season, it looked like he could still sling it around.

However, Rosenfels is 33 and definitely won't be with the Giants much longer. Not to mention the fact that he might still believe he can be a starter someone and could go the route of David Carr and sign somewhere else in the very near future.

With Rhett Bomar out the door and Jim Sorgi not under contract, the Giants have no third option at backup quarterback. Ryan Perrilloux could be that person, but I'm not willing to accept that; he wasn't very successful in college.

This class of quarterbacks is deep, and some very talented players could end up going in the late rounds, such as Tyrod Taylor, Ricky Stanzi and Greg McElroy.

None of these players look like franchise changers, but they could serve a purpose for an NFL team looking for a reliable backup.

Oh, and need I remind you naysayers that the Giants have drafted a quarterback twice now during the Eli Manning era, including the 2008 draft?

That same 2008 draft took place approximately two months after Manning won Super Bowl XLII MVP. If that isn't proof that the Giants are always looking to secure themselves a solid backup quarterback, I'm not sure what is.

They have missed on the previous two who are no longer on the team, and it is definitely not out of the question to think they could draft a QB in the 2011 draft.

Obviously I could be wrong, but to completely dismiss the idea is ludicrous.

On Tuesday, New York Magazine's own John Heilemann appeared on MSNBC's Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell to discuss the current run of Republican candidates and the news that Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour had officially dropped out of the race. Who's left and who's got a viable chance? "Romney is benefiting from the fact that among the most credible candidates — the non-nut candidates," explained Heilemann, "he has the most name recognition in the Republican party."

2011 NFL Draft: New England Patriots Final Mock Draft with Analysis

It's that time of year again: NFL draft week.

The 2011 NFL draft is just a few days away, and fans of each team are gearing up for an action-packed weekend.

Out of the 32 teams in the NFL, the New England Patriots have set themselves up best for the NFL draft with nine selections—six in the top 92 and three in the top 33, not too shabby.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is in the process of rebuilding his once dynasty football team into a much different team filled with youth and potential for that same greatness that was once reached in the early 2000s.

Here is my final New England Patriots mock draft—hope you all enjoy and be sure to leave your feedback!

*Note: this mock does not include trades, but it's safe to assume that Bill Belichick and the Patriots will make several trades.*

Is Fausto Carmona's Star Starting to Fade Away?

Quick Note: Kaela Bishop beat me to the punch posting a Fausto Carmona piece this week. You can read it here: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/678799-cleveland-indians-why-fans-cant-expect-a-win-with-fausto-carmona-on-the-moun. Also, Jim Berdysz did an excellent job arguing that Justin Masterson is the Tribe's true ace, not Carmona. You can read that one here: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/672863-cleveland-indians-has-justin-masterson-become-the-tribes-new-ace. Seems like all of us Tribe fans are hating on Carmona this week.

One night he’s dealing and dazzling; the next he’s struggling and sad to watch. One night he’s in the zone; the next he can’t find the strike zone. One night he’s an ace; the next he’s a joker.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to rooting for Fausto Carmona.

Fausto Carmona’s pitching is more bipolar than Charlie Sheen. We’ve all seen it this year, starting with Carmona blowing up against the White Sox then shutting down the Red Sox just six days later. His whole career’s been like that. Look at his year to year stats:

2006: 1-10, 5.42 ERA (83 ERA+), 58 SO, 31 BB, 1.87 SO:BB, 7.0 SO/9, 3.7 BB/9

2007: 19-8, 3.06 ERA (148 ERA+), 137 SO, 61 BB, 2.25 SO:BB, 5.7 SO/9, 2.6 BB/9

2008: 8-7, 5.44 ERA (79 ERA+), 58 SO, 70 BB, 0.83 SO:BB, 4.3 SO/9, 5.2 BB/9

2009: 5-12, 6.32 ERA (67 ERA+), 79 SO, 70 BB, 1.13 SO:BB, 5.7 SO/9, 5.0 BB/9

2010: 13-14, 3.77 ERA (102 ERA+), 124 SO, 72 BB, 1.72 SO:BB, 5.3 SO/9, 3.1 BB/9

2011: 1-3, 5.76 ERA (65 ERA+), 21 SO, 11 BB, 1.91 SO:BB, 6.4 SO/9, 3.3 BB/9

The biggest problem with Carmona’s pitching seems to be his walks. He’s never been a big strikeout pitcher, meaning that when he walks too many people, it hurts him even more. 2007 and 2010 saw Carmona do a good job limiting walks; not coincidentally, those were his best years. 2006, 2008 and 2009 saw his walks rise out of control; again, not coincidentally, those were his worst years.

So what’s happening in 2011?

Carmona’s BABIP (batting average on balls in play) is actually below the league average, so it’s not that he’s simply been unlucky. His strikeout rate is one of his highest and his walk rate is one of his lowest. This has typically foreshadowed good things for Carmona, but he’s getting knocked around so much it’s starting to look more and more like 2008 or 2009 all over again.

Fausto Carmona is supposed to be the ace of a pitching staff that is tied for second best in runs allowed in the American League. Thanks to that, the Tribe is off to a great start; yet it feels like it’s despite Carmona instead of because of him. The Indians are winning on the wings of Masterson and Josh Tomlin and in spite of Fausto Carmona.

Maybe we’re all just suffering from poor perception. Let’s clear it up right now with one simple sentence:

Fausto Carmona will never be an ace.

It’s just that simple. Fausto Carmona will never approach the likes of other Tribe greats like Bob Feller, CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, etc. He’ll probably never even approach the greatness of Herb Score. Score would’ve been great if he hadn’t gotten hurt; Carmona’s just not great.

The thing we always cling to is that magical 2007 campaign. The truth is that Fausto caught lightning in a bottle in 2007. The stars lined up just right for Carmona four years ago and we’re still paying the price for buying into that. Things never stay perfect and Fausto Carmona is not a Cy Young candidate.

In the end, Fausto Carmona is a good pitcher but not a great one. If he’s your third starter, you’re in great shape. If he’s your second starter, you’ll need a little luck, but you’re probably in good shape. If he’s your ace, you’re in trouble.

The Indians are off to a great start and I couldn’t be happier with the team. If they want to keep up their success, though, they’ll need to find a real ace.

Maybe it could be Alex White or someone else coming up from Columbus.

Maybe it could be making a trade for Zack Greinke (if the Brewers struggle) or Felix Hernandez (if the Mariners decide to actually move him) or someone like that. (Alright, so that’ll never happen because it would involve spending money. One can dream, though)

The big picture take-home message of this all is simple. Fausto Carmona will never be an ace or pitch like he did in 2007 and we should move on from that idea. Once we start thinking of him as a serviceable pitcher instead of an elite one, then we’ll be able to appreciate him for what he is instead of what we want him to be.

Zite for iPad gets a new version and a new CEO

In previous reviews I've said Zite is my favorite way to get the latest news on the variety of subjects I follow, and unlike more traditional RSS feed readers, Zite lets me discover stories from websites I would never have seen.

Zite pushed out an update yesterday with an in-app browser, performance improvements and clipboard support for long URLs.

I think what I like most about Zite is the presentation of the articles. They look very clean, ad free, and are just simply easy on the eyes. Of course some publishers complained about ads being stripped out, and Zite received some threats in the form of a cease and desist letter from some of the biggest publishers on the web. The response was to accommodate any publisher with a direct web link, and that's happened with every request Zite has received.

Crowds gather for guru's funeral

NHL Playoffs 2011: Will the Game 7 Curse Be Broken?

Playing seven games in the first round is considered to be a curse that dates all the way back to 1992 when the Pittsburgh Penguins had to beat the Washington Capitals in seven games in the first round before beating the Chicago Blackhawks for the Cup.

But with perhaps three of the biggest matchups this playoff season all going to seven games, it may be time for that curse to be broken.

There is no doubt that Vancouver has had trouble the last three games, blowing a three game lead to the Blackhawks this series.

They are now sweating it out before tonight’s game seven a game that may see history repeat itself as the Blackhawks prepare to send the Canucks home for the third year in a row.

The Canucks also have the curse of the President’s Trophy on their shoulders as only the Red Wings have won the Cup since 2003 after winning the President’s Trophy.

While the Canucks played their best game of the series on Sunday according to coach Alain Vigneault (via NHL.com), they need to step it up one more time if they expect to make it out of the series alive.

Another big Game 7 we will see tonight is the Philadelphia Flyers taking on the Buffalo Sabres in a series that has been back and forth since its first game.

While the Flyers have put two back to back wins together in this series (Games 2 and 3), they have also had a duck-duck-goose type of goalie situation.

This may be the hardest series to call as there is definitely no clear indication of the momentum going one way or the other and it has taken overtimes in both Games 5 and 6 to declare a winner. This may be the game to watch for this round.

The Tampa Bay Lightning refuses to let the Pittsburgh Penguins leave the first round without a fight as they have put two impressive back-to-back games together, forcing the Penguins to work for round two.

This series saw a 2OT in game four that declared Pittsburgh the winner, but that game may have taken all the energy Pittsburgh had as the last two games have been won by a combined 14 points compared to the Penguins’ four points.

This leaves the door wide open for the Lightning unless the Penguins can get back in gear at home on Wednesday to close out this intense series.

While the Red Wings, Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals and the San Jose Sharks are not a shabby list of teams that have closed out their series’ in six games or less, the teams going to game seven also have some impressive credentials, including both teams in the Stanley Cup Final last year.

It is not to be forgotten that the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins may also go to seven games in their series if the Canadiens pull off a win tonight.

If there was any year for the seven game curse to be broken, a feat the last 32 teams could not do, this is the year. And with the pace of the playoffs this year, it is definitely a feat that would fit right in.

Malaria rises among UK travellers

The number of malaria infections recorded among UK residents has increased by nearly 30% over the past two years.

New figures from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) reveal there were 1,761 new cases in 2010.

Over the past decade most infections have occurred among people who visited West Africa or South Asia.

The HPA is warning travellers to heed advice on how to avoid malaria, which is the world's second biggest killer.

In 2008 there were 1,370 new cases but the following year the numbers increased to 1,495.

In 2010, almost 40% of UK residents who contracted the disease had visited either Nigeria or Ghana, while 11% had been to India.

The HPA believes these travellers may not have sought or were unable to access advice on malaria prevention or had not thought they were at risk because they knew the area they were travelling to.

And these kind of travellers appear to be more at risk because they generally stay for longer than other visitors, such as those on business.

“It is a myth that people who have had malaria will not get it again”

They also tend to stay with friends and family rather than in hotels or resorts, and so are exposed to the same risk of contracting the disease as local people.

Professor Peter Chiodini, who heads the HPA's malaria reference laboratory, said the figures - released on World Malaria Day - are a timely reminder for travellers to take precautions against the disease.

"Anyone who is travelling to a country where malaria is present should take travel advice and appropriate medication.

"Even people living in Britain visiting the country in which they were born or grew up, or have previously visited, are not immune from malaria and should take precautions."

Yep, Kids, You?re Not Allowed to Call Your Teachers D-Bags on Your Vlog

Even if this is your teacher.

Way back in 2007, high school student Avery Doninger took to her personal LiveJournal blog to gripe about school administrators who canceled Jamfest, a popular school festival. Having mass e-mailed the student body about the issue and attempted to resolve it in person, Doninger was fuming and called the administrators "douchebags." In return, the school barred her from running for reelection as class secretary her senior year. Arguing that she was off campus and exercising her right to free speech when she likened her teachers to antiquated feminine hygiene products, she naturally sued. Only this week was the matter put to rest, with a federal appeals court in New York pronouncing that Connecticut Lewis B. Mills High School officials were within their rights to discipline Doninger, and that they acted reasonably. This is a bad day for Doninger, who not only received an unwanted ruling, but also is once again in the headlines for using a derogatory term that went out of style in 2009.

Tricky operation

A premature baby receives treatment in the high-tech Neonatology ward of the Centre Hospitalier de Villefrance Sur Saone

Health IT: a tricky operation

It is something that patients in many countries are acutely aware of: while our personal lives are effortlessly kept in sync by the internet and mobile devices, the management of our healthcare can seem stuck in the dark ages.

Hard-copy patient records are easily neglected, lost, or delayed in transit between busy clinicians. And even when an individual hospital or clinic uses computers, these may not be connected to the internet or to any other part of the wider health service.

Some countries, like Hong Kong, have succeeded in putting patient records online. But others have struggled: most notoriously, the UK has spent £12bn of public funds on centralising its IT, but the program is years behind schedule and has had to be scaled back.

Worse than a can of tomatoes

A Nokia handset running Healthcare Heartbeat softwareHealthcare Heartbeat uses smartphones instead of bleepers to help doctors keep track of their patients

"We've worked with hard-pressed hospitals that have spent a fortune on IT and yet uniformly the staff don't even know what's going on with individual patients", says Gregg Webb, chief executive of Service Heartbeat.

His company sells communication technology to hospitals in the UK and US. The system uses smartphones as a replacement for old-fashioned beepers.

"We couldn't believe it at first. Compared to the way a supermarket chain manages the its stock, healthcare is way behind. Cans of tomatoes are being treated better than patients."

Mr Webb's company is one of a new breed that takes a non-traditional approach to healthcare IT. Instead of putting patient records at the heart of the system, these companies emphasise the need for timely, easy communication between health professionals in any location.

Technology of Business
Special Report: The Technology of Business Technology 'key to improving customer service' Does your firm need its own mobile app? Tech start-ups reveal cost-cutting tips The new internet architects Big brands set for rural India's shelves Tablets take over the workplace Getting your business cloud-ready

This approach sidesteps the most expensive and complicated obstacle: that of digitising millions of existing patient records and putting the information into a mammoth central database.

And when you remove the need for billion-dollar IT projects, which inevitably favour billion-dollar IT companies, then suddenly much smaller enterprises are in with a chance of getting their products into hospitals.

'It's not about the money'

"You can spend as much as you want on IT and still have nothing to show for it", says Dr James Britton, founder and financier of a small company called MeddServe.

"We can only invest a tiny amount compared to other companies, and certainly compared to the British government. But it's not actually about the money."

The Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre in Chennai, South IndiaThis privately-run Indian hospital has tested a cloud-based IT system, called Meddserve

Meddserve has developed a cloud-based hospital management system, giving doctors, administrators and patients the ability to share information via a website, regardless of where they are.

Meddserve has just completed a trial of the online service at a 2000-bed super hospital in Chennai, South India.

"It's a relatively poor part of the world. But now patients there are getting a more efficient, more high-tech service than patients in the UK", says Mr Britton.

But so far, MeddServe has only got its product into hospitals in the developing world, which have the benefit of a 'fresh start' - they have no incumbent software and no central government policies getting in the way.

And this highlights a potential downside of hospitals going it alone with new technology products like Meddserve and Healthcare Heartbeat: if hospitals adopt different products ad hoc, then it may be harder to integrate them in future.

A fragmented future

A hint of these difficulties is already being seen in southern France, where hospitals have adopted different systems and are only now trying to share information.

Doctors and nurses at the Centre Hospitalier Villefranche-sur-Saone, near Lyon, walk around with laptops rather than clipboards, and they are proud that their hospital has made the leap online.

"The nurses have got everything on computer - heartrate, breathing, video, the patient's file," says Dr Phillip Rebaud.

"This allows a completely coherent set of data, which helps us to refine our treatment of the patient."

But although the hospital is wired-up internally, it's Health Information Manager, Jean-Francois Botton, admits that there are problems "achieving wider connectivity".

In an ideal world, all hospitals might integrate via a single online platform. But things have gone way past that point, and now Mr Botton has to cope with many systems working in parallel.
