Magic Johnson Doesn't Understand What Is Going On With Lakers Anymore
Following the Los Angeles Lakers playoff loss to the Dallas Mavericks, a couple of Lakers legends, Jerry West and Magic Johnson, came out and said that it would be in the Lakers' best interest to start all over and rebuild the team.
Here's the exact quote from Johnson (via LATimes.com):
"Dr. Buss has a lot of work to do," said Johnson. "He's probably going to have to blow this team up after the season if the Lakers lose this series because you have to come back with some fresh faces. You have to pick between the two big men with which one you keep and then you trade the other one."
--snip--
"The Lakers have two problems," said Johnson. "They're too slow and they have no athletes. When you think about all the teams that are in the playoffs right now, they all can run fast and jump high. Sometimes you can be together too long. This group has been probably together too long."

It's amazing how we overreact when a team has one bad series. They did not have a great year by any stretch of the imagination, but they were still the second-best team in the western conference in the regular season. They still have as much talent as any team in the league. And they will be really good next year, too.
Who are the Lakers going to get that is going to make them better next year? Are they going to trade Andrew Bynum? Does anyone think Orlando is going to trade Dwight Howard anytime soon?
You don't blow up a team that is still good enough to win a championship. They do have to make some smaller roster moves, but they will be fine next season.
Just because they don't win a title one year doesn't mean that they aren't capable of getting back there next year. Eventually they will have to make some major moves, but that's not for at least another two years.
Magic Johnson, and any other analyst saying that the Lakers need to blow the team up, need to take a step back and realize that they just ran into a team that was playing better than they were. Sometimes that happens, you just have to accept it.
