French Open 2011: Maria Sharapova on Her Way to Round Two

After capturing the title in Rome at the Italian Open the week prior to the start of the French Open, Maria Sharapova will be attempting to win the final jewel in her grand slam crown??by winning the French Open for the first time.

A win in Paris would give her a career grand slam.  The Russian has already won the 2004 Wimbledon championship, the 2006 U.S. Open and the 2008 Australian Open.

The French Open and its clay surface has never been kind to Sharapova.  The furthest she has advanced in Paris was a semifinal appearance in 2007.  But this year she will be trying to stretch herself into the finals, hoping for a French Open championship in 2011.

Sharapova, seeded No. 7,  got off to a good start today by defeating Mirjana Lucic of Croatia 6-3, 6-0 on Tuesday.

Although Lucic started the match well, keeping pace in the early games, Sharapova won the last nine games to finish the match.  During the two sets, Sharapova never faced a break point.  The match was over in 56 minutes.

This sends Sharapova into the next round where she will face Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.  The Russian beauty will be taking these matches one at a time trying to establish early dominance by maintaining her serve and her pinpoint accuracy.
