Roy Oswalt May Retire: Was the Acquisition a Mistake?

Entering this baseball season, the Philadelphia Phillies pitching quartet of Halladay, Hamels, Lee, and Oswalt were being mentioned as the best group of hurlers ever to be assembled. Many believed 100 victories would be amassed through pitching alone.

Fast forward to late June and things are not as sweet as we thought they would be. Roy Oswalt has been as much drama as a reality television show, and his latest injury has only complicated matters.

Oswalt left Thursday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after just two innings. The Phillies went on to lose the game 12-2.  Oswalt said the injury had been bothering him for some time.

He has been dealing with the back injury since April 15 and on April 26, Oswalt went just three innings, which was the shortest outing of his career.

The 11-year veteran had to deal with personal problems this season as well. He left the team to visit his home in Mississippi after storms ravaged the region in late April. It has been a tale of two seasons for Oswalt since his return to the team. Prior to leaving the team he was 3-1, but since then he is only 1-5 with a 4.06 ERA.

His record of 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA is doing more harm than good to the Phillies as of late.

Naturally the question arises, what is wrong with Oswalt? It could be one of two things, either the situation back home is still affecting him or he is not playing 100 percent healthy. The latter seems to be the more realistic case.

On Friday, Oswalt was placed on the 15-day DL, which will cause him to miss his next start. He will undergo an MRI on Monday.

According to AHN.com, Oswalt may be leaning to retirement since he already has doubts his back will be able to sustain the rigors of the rest of the season as a result of two degenerative disks in his back.

If this is the end, it was a good trial run for Oswalt that will cause the chatter about the big four to cease, but at least Ed Wade and the Houston Astros are paying the majority of his contract for this season.
